TDP Plans 33 Percent Women Reservation For 2029 Andhra Pradesh Elections

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national working president Nara Lokesh announced that the party plans to reserve 33 per cent of its seats for women in the 2029 Andhra Pradesh elections. The declaration came at TDP’s ‘Mahanadu’ meet and was framed as a shift towards a “new political era” led by stronger participation of women in internal and electoral politics.

Lokesh linked the proposal to debates around the national Women’s Reservation Bill, which has still not been applied. Lokesh said the TDP move should not wait for further consensus in Parliament. Party leaders described the announcement as both an organisational reform and a message to other parties on women’s representation in public life.

Explaining the idea, Lokesh said the 33 per cent reservation would cover both party posts and future candidate lists from 2029. Lokesh said, “I strongly believe that the next year of Indian politics belongs to women’s leadership. India took a historic step by bringing the Women’s Reservation Bill. Our vision is clear. Women must not remain beneficiaries alone. Women must become decision makers. Unfortunately, in the recent parliament session, opposition parties rejected this bill,”

Lokesh contrasted the TDP women reservation proposal with what Lokesh called unfulfilled promises by rivals. Lokesh said, “Many parties talk about women’s empowerment during elections and forget about them after elections. But the Telugu Desam Party, since our inception, has always believed in the power of women. We have always supported their aspirations and dreams. We stood by them, and we believe that they have a greater role to play in Indian political discourse. Therefore, I propose that we leave from the front. Today, from this sacred Mahanadu stage, I propose that in the 2029 elections, Telugu Desam Party should allocate 33% seats to women,”

TDP women reservation push through Mahanadu and Stree Shakti theme

This year’s Mahanadu focused on ‘Stree Shakti’ or Women’s Power, adding emphasis to the TDP women reservation message. Delegates were told that the party wanted women to share leadership responsibilities at every level. Lokesh added, “Not as a slogan, but as a commitment to the future of India. We want more women lawmakers. We want more women leaders. We want more women policymakers. The future of the Telugu Desam Party will be led shoulder to shoulder by our women. This is our resolve. This is our responsibility. This is our commitment,”

Political analysts noted that the TDP women reservation announcement came while the national Women’s Reservation Bill still waits for implementation. According to them, the party’s stand aims to act as a model inside Indian politics. They said the step could place extra pressure on other organisations that support the Bill in principle, yet have not fixed internal quotas.

Within the party, the TDP women reservation agenda has already influenced organisational choices. The TDP recently appointed Byreddy Shabari as its first woman National General Secretary. Leaders see this move as part of a wider plan to build a sustained pipeline of women office-bearers, so that the 33 per cent target for roles and tickets can be met.
