A major disturbance broke out at Patliputra Railway Station in Bihar after hundreds of candidates who had appeared for the Bihar Police Prohibition Department examination staged a protest over alleged inadequate train arrangements. The demonstration quickly escalated into violence, leading to vandalism, stone-pelting, and police action, including the use of tear gas and a baton charge.

Violence erupted at Patliputra Railway Station in Bihar as candidates protested inadequate train arrangements following an examination, leading to vandalism and stone-pelting which security forces dispersed with tear gas and baton charges.

Authorities later said the situation had been brought under control, although security has been tightened around the railway station to prevent any further unrest.

Why Did the Protest Break Out?

According to officials, a large number of candidates gathered at Patliputra Railway Station after completing their examination and were trying to return to their respective hometowns. However, many alleged that the railway authorities had failed to arrange enough trains to handle the sudden rush of passengers.

As overcrowding increased and delays mounted, frustration among the candidates grew. Many began protesting inside the station premises, demanding additional trains and better management of the crowd.

What initially started as a demonstration over travel arrangements soon spiralled into a tense confrontation.

Violence and Vandalism at the Station

Officials said that sections of the crowd allegedly damaged railway property during the protest. An exam special train stationed at the platform was reportedly targeted, with parts of the train being vandalised.

The unrest intensified when some protesters allegedly began pelting stones, creating panic among passengers and railway staff present at the station.

Authorities believe that a few anti-social elements may also have joined the gathering and contributed to the violence, further worsening the situation.

Police Use Tear Gas and Baton Charge

As the protest escalated, local police, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, and other security agencies rushed to the spot to restore order.

According to officials, repeated appeals were made asking the protesters to remain calm and clear the tracks. However, after the crowd refused to disperse, security forces used tear gas shells and later carried out a baton charge to bring the situation under control.

Police also reportedly fired warning shots in the air after attempts to pacify the protesters failed.

Tracks blocked, trains halted, as thousands of candidates, protesting delays in the Bihar Police exam, gathered at Patliputra station. The agitation disrupted rail services for hours before officials arranged special transport and cleared the lines.

The action eventually succeeded in dispersing the crowd, allowing railway operations to gradually resume.

Officials Injured During the Clashes

The violence also left several officials with minor injuries. Among those hurt was Inspector General (IG) Jitendra Rana, who was present at the station to supervise the operation.

According to IG Rana, around 200 to 250 candidates had blocked train movement at the station. He said police and railway officials initially tried to convince them to end the protest peacefully, but the situation turned violent after stone-pelting began.

Fortunately, officials confirmed that while some personnel sustained injuries, there were no reports of any serious casualties.

Administration Says Situation Is Under Control

Patna District Magistrate Dr. Thiyagarajan said the unrest was linked to dissatisfaction over train arrangements despite the deployment of special trains for examinees.

He stated that the administration had arranged additional services, but the heavy crowd and the involvement of certain disruptive elements contributed to the chaos. According to him, only minimal force was used to disperse the protesters and restore normalcy.

Officials added that all train services affected by the disruption have since resumed operations.

Investigation Underway

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are identifying those involved in vandalism and violence. CCTV footage from the station, along with other evidence, is being examined to trace the individuals responsible for damaging railway property and attacking officials.

Authorities have appealed to candidates and the public to maintain peace and cooperate with the investigation.

Security Tightened at Patliputra Railway Station

Following the incident, security has been significantly increased at Patliputra Railway Station. Additional police personnel and Railway Protection Force teams have been deployed across the premises to prevent any repeat of the unrest.

Officials described the situation as “tense but fully under control” and said strict monitoring is being maintained.

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges of managing large crowds during competitive examinations, particularly when thousands of candidates travel at the same time. Many candidates had reportedly complained about overcrowded platforms and insufficient transport arrangements, leading to the chain of events that unfolded at the station.
