Miracles do exist. A road widening project in Ujjain has run into a problem that the officials were not ready for it. An eight-foot standing idol of Lord Hanuman has remained at its spot despite repeated attempts to move it.
In Ujjain, an 8-foot standing Hanuman idol at Khade Hanuman temple remains unmoved despite efforts to relocate it for road widening ahead of the 2028 Simhastha festival, prompting officials to consult experts after machinery failed.
The temple structure around the idol has already been removed as part of infrastructure work being carried out ahead of Simhastha 2028. But the idol itself has stayed put.
Officials reportedly brought in heavy machinery, including a crane and JCB, and made several attempts to shift it. None of them worked.

Why Is the Idol Being Relocated?
Khade Hanuman temple is situated on the Kanthal Chauraha-Chhatri Chowk road in Ujjain. The road is being widened in anticipation of the influx of pilgrims who will be visiting Ujjain for the Simhastha festival in 2028. This has been done to facilitate the flow of traffic.
This temple is situated within the limits of the road construction project.
The idea of the administration was to dismantle the temple and move the idol of Hanuman somewhere else, apparently to Tanki Chowk.

The building that housed the idol has been dismantled.
Four Attempts, But the Idol Stayed Put
It has been reported that the attempts to shift the sculpture were made by officials on four separate occasions. Heavy machinery was employed in these attempts, including cranes and JCB machines.
The authorities tried to shift the idol delicately; however, the sculpture apparently did not budge.
Following these unsuccessful attempts, it became apparent to the authorities that using any additional pressure can be dangerous.

The first consideration here is the risk that the idol will get damaged.
An excavation was reportedly conducted in order to establish how deeply the idol is embedded in the ground.
The administration is reportedly considering scanning and other technical methods to study the idol and the area around its base.
The purpose is simple – understand the structure before deciding what to do next.
An examination could help determine whether the idol has a deep foundation, whether it is connected to an older structure or whether soil and construction around the base are making relocation difficult.
Experts, including a team associated with IIT Indore, have reportedly been brought into the process to help assess the problem.

How Old Is the Idol?
This is one of the most fascinating aspects of the story.
According to the accounts from the locality, the temple of Khade Hanuman has an estimated age of 170 years. Some sources have claimed that the temple has a relation with the period of 1857.
However, the statue might have a completely different origin.
Some of the local traditions and the accounts of the experts mentioned in reports have claimed that the statue could have a completely different origin than the existing temple. The artistic style of the statue has been found to resemble the statues of the Paramara period of Malwa.
It was even suggested that it could belong to the time of King Bhoj.
However, such information needs to be taken with caution.
There is a difference between the local traditions, the observations made by the expert and the archaeological dating.
It is only after the scientific and archaeological investigations can we say anything about the origin of the idol.
Ujjain Has More Than Roads to Protect
Ujjain is preparing for a major religious gathering, and better roads are clearly needed.
Simhastha attracts enormous crowds, placing pressure on roads, public transport, sanitation, security and other civic infrastructure. Road expansion is therefore part of a larger effort to prepare the city.
But Ujjain is also a city with a deep religious and historical legacy.
Its development projects often have to work around temples, heritage structures and sites that carry significance for local communities.
That makes the Khade Hanuman case a useful example of the challenge cities face when modern infrastructure meets older cultural landscapes.
