Police identified the deceased as 60-year-old Milan Das, from Ghure Tola locality. Police said Das had long performed religious duties at the Bodheshwar temple on the western side of the town. Around six months ago, Das began building another temple about 200 metres from the house.

Police said Das spent most of the time at the construction site in recent months. On Tuesday afternoon, Das was present on the temple premises when unknown assailants attacked. Police said Das suffered critical injuries during the assault. Local people took Das to the Bangarmau community health centre.

Doctors at the Bangarmau community health centre declared Das dead, police said. After the death, a few locals gathered and blocked the Hardoi-Unnao road in protest, police said. Tension was reported in the area as people reacted to the killing.

Police said forensic and police teams reached the scene and gathered evidence. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, police said. Officers were also checking CCTV footage from nearby locations. Police said the reason behind the murder was not known yet.

Circle Officer Santosh Singh said multiple teams have been formed to identify and arrest the accused. Singh said all possible angles are being examined. Singh said efforts are underway to trace the attackers. Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the motive.

The deceased’s elder brother, Virendra, told police that the family had no known dispute with anyone. Virendra said the motive would become clear only after investigation.
