Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana asserted that disrespecting the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ constitutes a violation of loyalty to the Constitution, particularly after some members sat during its playing in the Vidhan Sabha. Mahana stressed that respecting national symbols is a key constitutional commitment for elected MLAs.

CCTV Footage Confirms Incident

According to the speaker Mahana the incident took place a few days back and was later confirmed through CCTV footage. He said that everyone should respect the national song when it is being played in the honour of nation.

“Even the Constitution of India recognises republic and if one is not able to respect the republic, how can he have the right to be citizen of the country,” he said.

UP Speaker mentioned the pledge the assembly members have taken they entered Uttar Pradesh Assembly. According to the speaker, the pledge makes them maintain the full faith and loyalty towards the constitution of India.

Mahana made it clear by saying that this constitutional commitment makes respect for national symbols and it is an important matter for elected MLAs.

Why Vande Mataram Matters

Vande Mataram has an important place in India’s freedom movement and it was adopted as national song, while Jana Gana Mana as national anthem. The two have totally two different distinct official statuses.
