A severe heat wave across the US East Coast disrupted major public events on Friday. Organisers shut the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC, for several hours. Several Independence Day parades were also called off in nearby states. Officials warned that dangerous humidity was pushing the heat index to extreme levels.

A heatwave across the US East Coast drove the heat index towards 113°F in Washington, DC, prompting the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. Independence Day parades were cancelled in parts of Virginia and Maryland, while the Capitol Fourth Concert was set to proceed with adjusted gate times.

Forecasters expected Washington, DC, to feel like 113 degrees Fahrenheit 45 deg C on Friday. Early Friday afternoon, Freedom 250 said the fair on the National Mall would close until 5 pm. The group posted a message on X. “The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority,\” the statement said.

US East Coast heat wave forces event closures and cancellations

Independence Day parades were cancelled in Leesburg, Virginia. Similar decisions were taken in Laurel and Takoma Park, Maryland. Elsewhere along the corridor, organisers adjusted plans due to high temperatures. From Boston to Norristown, Pennsylvania, and Gettysburg National Military Park, schedules changed to manage heat risks.

Some rail services also faced disruption as temperatures climbed. Amtrak cancelled some trains in the Northeast. The company cited excessive heat that could affect the tracks. Officials across the region urged people to stay safe outdoors. Many areas remained under intense heat conditions through the end of the week.

US East Coast heat wave reshapes Capitol Fourth Concert plans

The Capitol Fourth Concert was still set to go ahead on Friday evening. The US Capitol Police said the show would start at 8 pm. Public gates were to open at 7 pm due to the heat. Police advised visitors to bring enough water. Non-glass water bottles and coolers were permitted.

The concert on the West Lawn of the US Capitol was to include Patti LaBelle and Alan Jackson. Other listed performers were Chicago and Kool & the Gang. Groups included the National Symphony Orchestra and the US Army Band Pershings Own. Also named were the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.

Heat concerns had already affected the concert schedule earlier in the week. The Capitol Police barred the public from attending the rehearsal on Thursday evening. The concert normally takes place on Independence Day. It was moved to July 3. The shift was due to Freedom 250 fireworks and programming on the National Mall.

US East Coast heat wave coincides with Trump travel and fireworks events

President Donald Trump was travelling to South Dakota on Friday evening. Trump planned to deliver a speech and watch fireworks at Mount Rushmore. Trump was also set to speak at the National Mall in Washington on Saturday evening. The event was being billed as a historically massive fireworks show.

US East Coast heat wave fuels New York City power appeal and political barbs

New York City’s heat index hit 106 degrees on Thursday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to conserve power. Mamdani cited higher energy demand and unexpected load challenges. Mamdani asked people to set ACs to 78 degrees F 25.5 deg C. Mamdani also advised switching off unused lights and electronics.

The appeal drew criticism from Republican leaders during the heat emergency. \”This is Communism at work,\” Senator Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, said. \”The Socialist Democrats are coming for your AC,\” Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, said. The remarks came as officials continued to stress safety during extreme heat.
