A controversy has emerged in Tamil Nadu involving actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, the leader of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The issue centres around allegations that children were used in political campaigning, raising concerns about child rights and ethical practices in elections.

Tamil Nadu child rights bodies allege C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK party used children in campaigns, causing emotional distress and violating child protection laws, prompting complaints to the Election Commission for investigation.
Child Rights Body Raises Strong Objections
The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has strongly criticised the alleged involvement of children in political activities.
The commission stated that using children for political purposes is unacceptable and harmful. It expressed concern that children were being emotionally influenced and placed under stress, which could affect their well-being.
Officials also pointed out that such actions go against democratic values, especially when children are used to influence the voting decisions of adults.
Complaint Filed With Election Commission
Following the allegations, a complaint has been submitted to the Election Commission of India. The SCPCR has urged authorities to take strict action and investigate the matter.
There has also been a demand for suo motu action, where the commission itself can begin an inquiry without waiting for further complaints.
Concerns Over “Emotional Exploitation”
Another group, Tamil Nadu Child Rights Watch (TNCRW), has also raised serious concerns. In its complaint, the group highlighted videos circulating on social media that allegedly show children being emotionally pressured.
According to TNCRW, some clips show children crying, refusing food, or behaving in distress to influence their parents’ voting choices. The group described this as “emotional exploitation” of minors.
Possible Legal Violations
The rights body stated that such actions may violate laws related to child protection. These include provisions that deal with cruelty towards children and the use of minors for exploitative purposes.
It also pointed out that involving children in election-related activities goes against guidelines set by the Election Commission, which clearly restrict such practices.
Call for Investigation and Support
TNCRW has urged authorities to launch a detailed investigation into the matter across the state. It has also asked for local child protection units and welfare committees to identify affected children and provide them with proper psychological support.
So far, there has been no official response from Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam regarding the allegations.
A Wider Debate on Ethics in Politics
The controversy has sparked a broader discussion on the ethical boundaries of political campaigning, especially when it involves children. Experts say protecting children’s rights must remain a priority, even during intense political activity.
As the issue unfolds, authorities are expected to examine the matter closely and decide on further action.
