In a major crackdown on examination-related malpractice, Dehradun Police have arrested an Assistant Professor of Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, for allegedly leaking questions from a semester examination conducted by Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU). The action comes as part of the Uttarakhand government’s ongoing campaign against exam mafias and efforts to ensure fair and transparent examinations.
According to police, the accused, Assistant Professor Ashish Kumar Gupta, was arrested following an FIR registered at Prem Nagar Police Station on the complaint of UTU Controller of Examinations Dr. Vinay Kumar Patel.

The complaint alleges that the professor circulated important examination questions to students through a WhatsApp group before the UTU even-semester examination held onAfter the examination, university officials reportedly found significant similarities between the questions shared before the exam and the actual question paper. An internal inquiry committee constituted by the university also concluded that identical questions had been circulated among students through WhatsApp groups and other channels before the examination.
Police probe underway
Following the complaint, Dehradun Police launched an investigation under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police. Investigators collected evidence and arrested the accused professor. Police said electronic devices seized during the investigation are being examined, while the involvement of other individuals linked to the alleged network is also under investigation.
CM Dhami warns of strict action against exam mafias
Reacting to the arrest, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the Uttarakhand government follows a zero-tolerance policy against anyone attempting to compromise the future of the state’s youth. He said no person involved in recruitment exam irregularities, university examination malpractice, question paper leaks, or any attempt to undermine the integrity of the examination system would be spared.
Over 100 accused arrested under anti-cheating drive
The Chief Minister said the state’s stringent anti-cheating law and sustained enforcement have already led to the arrest of more than 100 members of exam mafias and their associates in various cases. He reiterated that the government’s objective is to establish a fair, transparent, and merit-based examination system for students and job aspirants, adding that the campaign against examination-related offences will continue with full determination.
