Dehradun: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand government took several steps in the Ankita Bhandari murder case, including prompt arrests, an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), prosecution proceedings and assistance to the victim’s family. The government also considered the family’s demands regarding the legal proceedings and the request for a CBI investigation.

Uttarakhand steps up in Ankita Bhandari case

From the outset, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami maintained that women’s safety and strict action against offenders were among the government’s top priorities. Following the incident, the police were directed to act promptly, and the accused were arrested within 24 hours of the case coming to light. An SIT was constituted to conduct a detailed investigation and ensure that legal action was taken against the accused based on the available evidence.

Uttarakhand’s government, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, moves quickly in the Ankita Bhandari murder case: forming an SIT, pursuing prosecution, and offering financial and employment support to the family, while considering a CBI inquiry and ensuring due process throughout.

During the investigation, a chargesheet was filed before the court based on the evidence collected and witness statements. The prosecution presented its case before the court, while action was also taken against the accused under the Gangsters Act.

Following the judicial proceedings, the convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by the court on the basis of the evidence presented and the due process of law. The state government facilitated action in accordance with legal procedures and the continuation of the prosecution process. Judicial orders relating to bail also formed part of the proceedings.

Government Lawyers Changed at Family’s Request

The state government gave due consideration to the concerns and demands of Ankita Bhandari’s family. At the family’s request, changes were made to the government-appointed lawyers so that its concerns and expectations could be represented during the judicial process.

The government also took steps to advance the process for a CBI investigation after Ankita’s parents raised the demand. The approach reflected the importance of listening to the family’s concerns and considering their demands within the framework of the law. The government maintained that, in sensitive cases, administrative action must be accompanied by efforts to maintain the confidence of the victim’s family.

₹25 Lakh Financial Assistance and Employment Support

Following Ankita’s death, the state government provided financial assistance of ₹25 lakh to support the family. Steps were also taken to provide employment to family members. Through these measures, the government sought to provide the family with economic and social support alongside the ongoing judicial process.

Women’s Safety and Justice Remain Priorities

The Ankita Bhandari case has prompted widespread discussion on women’s safety, criminal investigations and the judicial process. In such cases, the police, investigating agencies, prosecution, judiciary and government have distinct responsibilities.

The government’s role includes ensuring that investigating agencies act in accordance with the law, prosecution arrangements remain effective and the victim’s family receives the necessary assistance. Under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership, the state government highlighted its actions in the case, including prompt arrests, the SIT investigation, consideration of the family’s demands and financial assistance.

The government’s stated position is that crimes against women will be treated seriously and that action will be pursued in accordance with the law. The pursuit of justice for Ankita Bhandari extends beyond an individual criminal case, touching on broader concerns about women’s safety, responsive governance and public confidence in the rule of law. The steps outlined by the government reflect its stated commitment to administrative accountability and support for the victim’s family.
