A landslide in Nepal’s far-western Darchula district has partially obstructed the Chaulani River that has now given a new threat of fresh flood if more debris fall into the waterway. Now the authorities have placed communities with riverbank on alert and deployed security personnel to monitor the situation. This incident came at the time Nepal is still dealing with the impact of recent deadly floods and landslides in the country.

A landslide in Nepal’s Darchula district partially obstructed the Chaulani River, raising flood concerns. Authorities alerted communities, relocated 10 families, and deployed security; the river flow later normalized, though monitoring persists.

Landslide Disrupts Chaulani River Flow

The landslide happened in the Bhattar area of Api Himal Rural Municipality where debris and falling earth entered the Chaulani river and affected its flow. Darchula Chief District Officer Bartaraj Paudel said that the assessment of the damage underway and police has already been sent to the affected area.

The District Administration Office has warned that if the landslide continue it can further obstruct the river. That will make water move rapidly downstream and create a flash-flood risk.

Ten Families Moved To Safety

The landslide has also put Bhattar settlement at risk. Ten families have been relocated to relative’s homes as a precaution while the local government is providing essential supplies to them. According to local officials the landslide has continued and it had damaged roads and trekking trails in the area.

Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta directed local authorities and security agencies to remain on high alert and prepare for emergency rescue and relief operations. Even the security personnel have been deployed to check the situation and warn to areas that can be affected.

River Flow Returns Towards Normal

However, the immediate situations seems to be improved and reports on 4 September revealed the river gradually washed away some of the debris clearing the blockage. Even the Armed Police Force said the river was flowing normally while security personnel continuing the monitoring.

The Chaulani, also known as the Chameliya, rises in the Api Himal region before joining the Mahakali River, which forms part of the Nepal-India border. The latest incident highlights the continuing risks faced by communities in Nepal’s mountainous western region during periods of heavy rain and unstable terrain.
