Nepal is facing another major weather disaster as heavy rain has triggered floods, landslides and an avalanche across several districts. At least 24 people have died and 14 persons missing, while hundreds of families have been forced to vacate their homes.

Heavy rains in Nepal have caused floods, landslides, and an avalanche, resulting in at least 24 deaths and 14 people missing, while displacing hundreds of families across districts like Manang and Baglung and disrupting hydropower generation.

The Kali Gandaki River has faced some of the worst destruction. A huge part of a mountainside collapsed into the swollen river, sending rocks and debris into the water way. The incident was captured on video, showing people watching from a distance and the slope suddenly wiped out.

Heavy Rain Brings Fresh Destruction

Manang, Myagdi, Baglung, Parbat and Palpa are among the worst-affected districts after three days of heavy rainfall. Several areas in the Terai have also reported waterlogging and erosion.

Baglung has recorded 10 deaths, followed by six in Myagdi and two in Manang. Five people have died in Palpa, while one person was killed in a landslide in Dhanusha’s Mithila municipality.

Police said 14 people are still missing. Ten are missing in Manang, three in Myagdi and one in Baglung. Two people were injured in Lamjung, while Baglung and Myagdi reported one injury each.

A massive landslide in Nepal has been captured on camera, showing what appears to be an entire mountain slope collapsing within seconds. Homes, Bridges Washed Away

The disaster has directly affected 747 families. At least 143 houses have been completely destroyed and 51 partially damaged.

Parbat has suffered major damage, with 106 houses destroyed and around 540 people displaced. Six bridges have been completely destroyed and two others damaged. Government offices, animal shelters and vehicles have also suffered damage.

The swollen Kali Gandaki River washed away a concrete bridge linking Syangja and Gulmi, cutting road connectivity between the two districts.

Avalanche Adds To Rescue Challenge

The extreme weather has also caused an avalanche near Himlung Himal in Manang. Two people have died, while the search continues for others from an expedition group.

A helicopter was sent from Kathmandu for rescue work, but bad weather affected the operation. Officials planned to continue the search as weather conditions improved.

The latest disaster comes only weeks after flash floods struck parts of Nepal on August 26.

Hydropower Generation Hit

Nepal’s electricity infrastructure has also been affected. The 144-MW Kali Gandaki ‘A’ hydropower project stopped generation after all three gates of the Mirmi dam were opened because of rising water levels.

Flooding and landslides damaged towers on the 220-kV Kali Gandaki Corridor. Problems on the Kushma-New Butwal transmission line also affected 358.2 MW of generation. Several projects, including Nilgiri and Rahughat, have faced disruptions.

Authorities are continuing rescue operations, searching for missing people and moving affected families to safer locations as rivers remain swollen and access to several areas remains difficult.
