The Tamil Nadu government has dropped the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, but the decision has left behind a major question: what happens to the land that has already been acquired for the project?
The answer, at least for now, appears to be industrial development.
The Tamil Nadu government dropped the Parandur airport plan and will use the approximately 1700 acres of acquired land for industrial development, while seeking an alternative site for Chennai’s second airport, stated Industries Minister S Keerthana.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S Keerthana told the Assembly on Tuesday that the land acquired for the Parandur airport would be considered for industries that do not affect local livelihoods and could generate jobs and economic activity in the region. The government is also looking for an alternative location for Chennai’s second airport.
The proposed Parandur airport was expected to require around 5,746 acres. Of this, about 1,700 acres had already been acquired, according to government-related records and reports.
