The man who allegedly hurled a slipper at MP Pappu Yadav during a press conference at his Delhi residence on Sunday belongs to Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr and has no previous criminal record, according to police sources.
Police identified Sumit, a 34-year-old man from Bulandshahr, UP, as the individual who allegedly hurled a slipper at MP Pappu Yadav in Delhi on Sunday during a press conference, citing the MP’s actions related to the Ram temple.
The sources identified the attacker as Sumit, 34, who works in an iron fabrication business in Ghaziabad.
During questioning, he told investigators that he had come to Delhi from Bulandshahr on Saturday to get a vehicle repaired. A police source said that another man, identified as Happy, was present in an SUV parked outside Yadav’s residence when the incident took place.
Preliminary questioning indicated that both men had travelled together from Bulandshahr to Delhi for the vehicle repair work. Investigators are verifying their claims and probing the motive behind the incident, the sources said No official statement has been issued by the Delhi Police so far.
The man allegedly threw a slipper at Independent MP Pappu Yadav during a press conference at his house on Sunday after the lawmaker defended his skit inside the Parliament House complex on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple.
Yadav was addressing the presser amid a row over his Friday protest with an FIR being filed in Varanasi against him, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party MP from Faizabad (Ayodhya) Awadhesh Prasad for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
The attacker questioned Yadav over his actions and alleged that the MP had insulted Lord Ram. He then threw a slipper at Yadav and a scuffle ensued between the Purnia MP’s supporters and the attacker.
