Media brands including CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO have taken legal action against the Donald Trump administration after journalists from the three news organisations were denied entry to the White House and had their press credentials deactivated.

CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO sued the Donald Trump administration after journalists were denied White House entry and had press credentials deactivated, challenging the government’s authority over press access based on coverage disputes and First Amendment rights.

The three outlets said the move raises serious concerns about press freedom and the government’s role in deciding which journalists can cover the US President.

Trump Accuses News Outlets Of ‘Fake News’

The controversy arose following Trump’s declaration that CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO would no longer be able to access the White House premises.

In a post made on Truth Social, Trump alleged that the three firms had been engaging in the publication of what he termed as “fake news”.

This ban came into place during the weekend when journalists from these companies found out that they were unable to gain access to the White House using their press passes.

Some reporters reported being denied access due to having their physical press badges confiscated.

Journalists Turned Away At White House

Betsy Klein, the correspondent for CNN, explained what happened when she tried to gain access to the White House facility. According to Klein, her press badge did not work at one of the checkpoints, whereupon a Secret Service agent informed her that her credential had been deactivated and advised her to visit the White House press office.

In a similar vein, Akayla Gardner, correspondent of MS NOW, recounted that an agent told her that her badge had been deactivated and requested her to surrender it.

Her cameraman was reportedly denied access as well, though another MS NOW representative was able to access the premises using a valid credential.
The events immediately grabbed attention from the press fraternity in Washington.

Three Media Organisations Challenge The Decision

CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO announced that they would jointly challenge the administration’s decision in court.

In a statement, the organisations said they were seeking to defend their First Amendment rights and the broader principle that the government should not decide what the press can report based on disagreement with its coverage.

The outlets argued that their credentials were revoked without prior notice or a formal process. The legal challenge has now moved the dispute from the White House gates to a federal courtroom, where questions over press access and presidential authority are expected to be examined.

White House Press Pool Becomes Another Flashpoint

The controversy has also affected the White House television press pool.
The television pool is a rotating system in which major US networks share footage of presidential events. It becomes particularly important when there is limited space for journalists at presidential appearances or during official travel.

CNN had been scheduled to serve as the television pool network on Monday and was expected to travel with Trump to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
However, the White House’s Sunday night press schedule did not name a primary television network for Monday’s pool.

Press Freedom At The Centre Of The Dispute

The White House Correspondents’ Association has criticised the restrictions, arguing that excluding a news organisation because of its reporting could have implications for the wider press corps.

The administration, on the other hand, has defended its authority over access to the White House and has repeatedly criticised media organisations whose coverage Trump considers inaccurate.

The dispute now goes beyond the three affected outlets. At its core is a larger question about how much control a US administration can exercise over journalists covering the President, and where that authority meets constitutional protections for the press.
