Jamia Millia Islamia students have achieved a major victory as the university administration announced plans to restore the student union and hold elections after nearly two decades, following 18 days of protests demanding the reinstatement of their elected representative body.

Jamia Millia Islamia will restore its student union after 18 days of protest, drafting the constitution by May 15, 2027, and holding elections within six weeks of the July 16, 2027 academic session start; disciplinary actions against students are also withdrawn.

The university administration’s announcement, the constitution for the new student union will be drafted by May 15, 2027. Elections are scheduled to take place within six weeks of the start of the next academic session, which is set to begin on July 16, 2027.

The administration has also announced that disciplinary action taken against students during the protests will be withdrawn and campus bans imposed in connection with the agitation will be revoked, according to the details provided.

The announcement prompted celebrations on campus, where students raised victory slogans and danced. The administration also asked students to end their hunger strike, after which the protesting students broke their fast.

Jamia To Draft Student Union Constitution By May 15, 2027

This decision of the university signifies a great turning point for students who had been calling for the revival of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).

VIDEO | Delhi: Ebin Basil, a third-year student of law at Jamia Millia Islamia ends his indefinite hunger strike on the 18th day after their demands for the restoration of the university’s students’ union was accepted.Addressing a press conference here, he said, “Today marks the 18th day of our hunger strike, and I am calling an end to it following the official registration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students Union. The university administration has agreed to all the demands we put forward. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the students of Jamia who stood by us, and to our comrades and sathis who joined me in this hunger strike. A special thanks goes to our very respected Haris Beeran Sir, Rajya Sabha MP, as well as the Jamia Alumni Association and all other alumni of Jamia. I am deeply grateful to everyone across the nation and worldwide who supported our movement for the restoration of this democratic process. As per the stated plan, the constitution of the student union is expected to be drafted within May 15, 2027. The elections are expected to be held after the session starts from July 16, 2027.

According to the administration, the elections will be conducted within six weeks of the session starting. If everything goes according to schedule, then the poll may occur in late August 2027.

Constitution is expected to form the basis for conducting the student union activities and polls. Other information regarding the process of polls and union formation would be known after the university’s announcement.

Why Were Jamia Students Protesting?

Students had been protesting for 18 days, demanding the reinstatement of an elected student union. The agitation included a hunger strike as protesters pressed the university administration to address their demands.

Jamia Millia Islamia has not held student union elections since 2005. The student union was dissolved by the university administration following violence on campus in March 2006, according to the information provided.

Since then, students have gone without an elected union for nearly two decades. The latest announcement has therefore become a significant development for those seeking a formal platform to raise student concerns and represent their interests before the university administration.

Registrar, Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi says, “We had received 3 demands from students…We have accepted all 3 of their demands. The approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Constitution shall be completed by 15th May, 2027. As oer their third demand we have revoked the disciplinary action taken on students who were rusticated or suspended or issued a showcause notice during the protesting period…There is Diwali vacation till 8th November. When the students come after that, I will reques them and resume our offline classes…”
