A three-year-old boy was left alone on a bridge in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district after his parents allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the swollen Godavari River late Thursday night. The child was later found crying and calling out “Amma-Nanna” (Mother-Father), as police launched a search for the couple.
The couple, identified as Dodda Sai, 29, and his wife Shireesha, 28, were residents of Velpuru village. According to police, the couple reached the bridge at around 10 pm on a scooter with their three-year-old son.
In Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, Dodda Sai, 29, and Shireesha, 28, allegedly died by suicide in the Godavari River late Thursday, leaving their three-year-old son alone on a bridge until police were alerted. Investigations into potential financial pressure are underway.

The couple allegedly left the child on the scooter before jumping into the swollen Godavari River. The boy remained alone on the bridge in the dark and cold until passersby noticed him crying and alerted the police.
Passersby eventually spotted the crying child and alerted the police. When locals heard him calling for his “Amma” and “Nanna”, they began looking around for his parents and realised that they were nowhere to be found.
Police soon arrived at the bridge and took the child into their care. The scooter was also secured, and the boy was later handed over to family members.
A search operation was launched in the Godavari after the couple was reported missing. Police teams were joined by local rescuers, swimmers and boat teams in an effort to trace them. The search was still underway when the incident was reported.
Police said Sai worked as a driver and had earlier spent some time in the Gulf before returning to Andhra Pradesh. Preliminary inquiries suggest that he may have been under considerable financial pressure and dealing with mounting debt.

Investigators are also looking into whether financial problems had anything to do with the couple’s decision to sell their house. Police, however, have not yet established financial distress as the reason behind the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the couple’s alleged suicide are being investigated, and police have registered a case as part of the inquiry.
