Veteran Bengali filmmaker Raja Sen, who is known for his sensitive storytelling and socially relevant film, passed away on August 16 at the age of 71 after illness.
Veteran Bengali filmmaker Raja Sen, celebrated for sensitive storytelling in films like ‘Damu’ and ‘Atmiyo Swajan’, passed away on August 16, aged 71, after illness. He received three National Film Awards for his socially relevant works.
In the Sen was undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and had been on ventilator support. His death has left the Bengali film and television industry mourning the loss of a filmmaker who spent decades telling stories centred on family, children and social issues.
Raja Sen’s Health Had Worsened In Recent Days
According to reports from PTI, the health of Sen had been deteriorating over the last few days as he suffered complications in his lungs, heart, and kidneys.
His first admission was at a private hospital due to an injury sustained to his lower back region. His health then began deteriorating further and complications started occurring in his lungs and heart.
He was then transferred to SSKM Hospital on Monday. While being treated at this hospital, complications also developed in his kidneys.
After being subjected to various treatments, he died on August 16.
Raja Sen’s Film Career Spanned Television And Cinema
Raja Sen began his journey in the 1980s via television in which he directed dramas and got connected with various well-received Bengali TV series.
Some of his TV series were Subarnalata, Adarsha Hindu Hotel and Arogyo Niketan.
Later on, he took up feature films and made his first film Damu in 1996.
Damu won the National Film Award for the Best Children’s Film, thus making him a filmmaker who can handle the story of children with great emotion and sensitivity.
He Won Three National Film Awards
The achievements of Raja Sen as a filmmaker in Bengali cinema were acknowledged by three National Film Awards throughout his life.
One of his films titled ‘Damu’ bagged the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.
His documentary titled ‘Suchitra Mitra’ also bagged the National Film Award.
His other important film that earned him an award is ‘Atmiyo Swajan’, which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.
As per his filmography, his last feature film was ‘Bhalobasar Galpo’ that came out in 2019.
Raja Sen’s Family
Despite his long career in the public eye, Raja Sen largely kept his personal life away from media attention.
He was married to Papiya Sen. The couple maintained a private life, and limited details about their relationship were publicly available.
Sen is survived by his two daughters, Subhasree Sen and Sreyoshi Sen.
