A strong earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, 10 August forcing people rushing out of homes and buildings in Bogata and other areas. The tremor of earthquake also fel in the nearby areas Ecuador and near Colombia’s border with Venezuela. According to initial reports, the earthquake came at magnitude of 7.4 with San Jose del Palmar in Choco province becoming the epicentre.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10th, epicentred near San Jose del Palmar at a depth of 107 km, causing injuries and significant damage in Quibdo and shaking buildings in Bogota and Ecuador.
Colombia Earthquake Strikes Near San Jose del Palmar
The earthquake came around 7.34 PM local time, approximate 400 kilometres west of Bogota. US Geological survey placed is depth around 107 kilometres making it a deep earthquake.
The depth although helped the limited impact in the area from its epicentre, however, the shocking weaves was reported in the region. Videos getting shared by people on social media, one can see people struggling to balance and apparent damage to buildings in San Jose del Palmar.
Injuries And Building Damage Reported
Choco governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi said that the authorities are concerned about the possible aftershock and had already started assessing the damager.
“We have just experienced a major earthquake in the [province] of Choco. We are concerned about aftershocks,” the governor said on X.

She also added, “Although the epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, there are injuries and significant damage to buildings in the (provincial) capital, Quibdo. We are already carrying out a damage assessment and will issue the first official report shortly.”
