Tamil Nadu DA Hike: In a good news for the Tamil Nadu government employees, teachers and pensioners, newly-elected Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay has announced a 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA).

The hike brings the DA from the existing 58% to 60%, aligning the state’s benefits with those of the Central Government. The order is set to take effect retroactively from January 1, 2026.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay announced a retroactive 2% Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for government employees, teachers, and pensioners, increasing it from 58% to 60% effective January 1, 2026. This decision benefits approximately 16 lakh individuals, adds ₹1,230 crore annually to state expenditure, and aligns benefits with Central Government rates.

Beneficiaries: Approximately 16 lakh individuals, including government staff, teachers, and both regular and family pensioners, will see an increase in their monthly payouts.

Fiscal Impact: This decision will result in an additional annual expenditure of ₹1,230 crore for the state exchequer.

The Chief Minister noted that the increase is a gesture of appreciation for the crucial role government employees play in delivering welfare schemes and is intended to help them cope with rising inflation.

The announcement marks one of the first major financial commitments by the newly sworn-in government. It follows the Chief Minister’s recent success in the Legislative Assembly trust vote and signals a focus on administrative stability and employee welfare.

“Considering the welfare of those who work tirelessly to implement the government’s various social welfare programs, we have decided to match the Union Government’s revision and provide this relief to our staff,” the official statement read.

The Directorate of Information and Public Relations confirmed that the government would allocate the necessary additional funds to ensure the timely implementation of this hike. This move is expected to provide significant financial relief to state employees who have been awaiting a revision in line with the Consumer Price Index trends of 2026.

Newly-elected Chief Minister Vijay had recently signed off on a scheme providing 200 units of free electricity to households. Notably, he has assured of continuing all the welfare schemes of the previous DMK government that includes Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme.
