Delhi has added 50 more zero-emission electric buses to its public transport fleet, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagging off the new vehicles on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The launch also marked the start of an interstate electric bus service between Delhi and Rewari, giving daily commuters another public transport option between the capital and Haryana’s NCR belt.

Delhi-Rewari electric bus service to boost NCR connectivity
The new Delhi-Rewari e-bus service is expected to help passengers who travel between Delhi and southern Haryana for work, education, trade and family reasons. Rewari is an important NCR town with road links to Gurugram, Manesar, Bawal and parts of Rajasthan. A cleaner public transport option on this route could reduce dependence on private vehicles for some commuters.
Interstate public transport is a crucial part of NCR mobility because travel patterns do not stop at state borders. Thousands of passengers move daily between Delhi and neighbouring districts in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Any reliable bus service on these corridors can help reduce congestion pressure, especially if routes are aligned with major transit points, metro stations and workplace clusters.
Electric buses also matter for Delhi because road transport remains a major contributor to urban air pollution. While buses are only one part of the emissions challenge, replacing diesel vehicles with zero tailpipe-emission buses can help lower local pollution exposure on busy corridors. The benefit is more visible when fleet expansion is matched with regular service frequency and charging readiness.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the new electric buses were an important step towards making Delhi’s public transport cleaner and more convenient. She said the Delhi-Rewari service would also strengthen connectivity within the NCR. The event was attended by MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Delhi Cabinet Minister Dr Pankaj Singh.
Why charging stations and testing centres matter
The launch was not limited to new buses. The government also highlighted charging infrastructure and vehicle testing as part of the same transport modernisation plan. Public EV charging stations at Hasanpur and Ghazipur are intended to support the broader shift to electric mobility, including buses and other electric vehicles operating in the city.
Charging infrastructure is one of the biggest practical requirements for any electric transport system. Buses need predictable charging schedules, depot support and backup capacity to avoid service disruption. The Tehkhand automated vehicle testing centre adds another layer to the transport upgrade. Automated testing centres use equipment-based checks for vehicle fitness, which can reduce manual discretion and improve consistency. In a city with heavy traffic volumes, regular and reliable vehicle testing is important for road safety, emissions compliance and the removal of unsafe vehicles from active use.
For passengers, these backend systems may not be immediately visible. However, they influence the quality of daily travel. Delhi’s larger shift towards electric public transport
Delhi has been trying to expand cleaner public transport as part of efforts to tackle pollution and improve mobility. They also help modernise a bus network that serves lakhs of passengers.

Electric buses can improve the environmental profile of the system, but service planning will decide whether more people shift from private vehicles to public transport.
The Delhi-Rewari route is also significant because NCR mobility requires coordination across administrative boundaries. An interstate e-bus route can become more useful if it is integrated with existing bus terminals, metro connections and local transport options at both ends.
