South Africa has been hit by two deadly mass shootings, leaving at least 27 people dead and 26 others injured, police said.
The deadliest attack took place at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, where 17 people were killed after gunmen opened fire on customers.
At least 27 people were killed and 26 injured in two separate mass shootings in South African townships, with 17 fatalities in Wedela and 10 in Lwandle, highlighting the nation’s ongoing gun violence problem.
Police said the victims included 13 men and four women. The attackers, reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, first targeted people outside the tavern before moving inside and continuing to fire.
Fifteen people were wounded in the attack and taken to medical facilities. The motive remains unknown, and no arrests have been made. Police have launched a manhunt for those responsible.
A separate mass shooting was reported in Lwandle township near Cape Town. Ten people were killed and 11 others wounded after gunmen entered an entertainment venue and opened fire on patrons.
Five victims were declared dead at the scene, while others were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The two shootings have once again put South Africa’s continuing problem of gun violence in the spotlight, particularly in township communities where deadly attacks at public venues have repeatedly claimed multiple lives.
