Tensions between Iran and the United States appear to have edged dangerously close to open confrontation, with Tehran now claiming it forced a tactical retreat by American naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz – one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Speaking in a televised interview, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described a moment of high-stakes brinkmanship during recent backchannel talks held in Islamabad. According to him, Iran issued a blunt warning to the US delegation over the movement of a minesweeper vessel.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf claims Iran forced a US naval retreat in the Strait of Hormuz via a military warning during Islamabad talks, reinforcing dominance amid ongoing disputes over nuclear ambitions and regional volatility.

The message, he suggested, was unambiguous: advance any further, and Iran would respond militarily. Within minutes, he claimed, the Americans backed off.

For Tehran, the episode reinforces its long-standing assertion of dominance over the Strait of Hormuz – a narrow maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of global oil shipments passes. Ghalibaf framed US mine-clearing operations not as routine security measures, but as a breach of an already fragile ceasefire.

His remarks also carried a political edge, targeting Donald Trump and dismissing Washington’s regional strategy as poorly conceived. According to Ghalibaf, broader US objectives – from weakening Iran’s military capabilities to forcing open the Hormuz route – have fallen short.

Yet beneath the rhetoric lies a more complex reality. Negotiations between the two sides, reportedly mediated in part through Pakistan, have yielded limited progress. While both nations have shown willingness to maintain a temporary ceasefire, deep divisions persist – particularly over Iran’s missile programme and nuclear ambitions.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground is growing more volatile. Iran has once again moved to restrict access through the waterway, with reports of warning fire against vessels attempting to pass amid the US-imposed blockade.
