The Calcutta High Court granted interim relief, halting the demolition of Abhishek Banerjee’s Amtala office in West Bengal until the end of July, demanding the status quo be maintained on the property reportedly owned by ‘Leaps and Bounds’.

The order comes after the local administration carried demolition drive against a five storey building, claiming that it was an unauthorised structure built without the required approvals.

High Court Stops Further Demolition

In the Bench, Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury passed an interim order that the nature and possession of the property should not be changed until the case is heard again or until the end of July. It also asked the Bengal government to submit all documents related to the property.

Informing that the office is reportedly owned by the company ‘Leaps and Bounds’. With the latest order, the administration has been asked to stop any further demolition work linked to its July 15 directive until the matter is heard again.

Why Was The Building Demolished?

The demolition drive began on Saturday as part of an anti-encroachment campaign launched by the local administration. Officers claim that notices had been issued to those concerned over the alleged unauthorised construction.

The administration says that the building was constructed on land purchased from the Leaps and Bounds Company. They allege that the office was constructed without an approved plan and thus violated the constriction rules.

They authorities stated that the demolition was carried out peacefully and lawfully. Security arrangements were also tightened in the area during the operation.

Abhishek Banerjee Calls Action Politically Motivated

Whereas Abhishek Banerjee strongly criticized the demolition calling it politically motivated and intended to demonstrate the Bharatiya Janata Party. He added that the BJP supporters entered the office premises carrying saffron flags during the demolition drive.
