Two infants have died after a fire broke out at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad, Telangana. The tragedy happened last Monday night. The situation with the evacuation of newborns caused by the blaze and the fire department’s response has been raised.
The conflagration broke out at SNCU at about 11.50 pm. There was an immediate evacuation of the newborns from the burning ward. Hospital and emergency authorities managed to get 28 children out of the affected ward. After the emergency alarm, the fire engine arrived at the hospital, and the firefighters managed to bring the situation under control.

There is a version of an electrical short circuit in one of the air-conditioners causing the fire, but it is still under investigation. Police have initiated an inquiry and are looking into the matter.
In particular, the focus of the investigation will be on the condition of electrical wiring, air-conditioning, and fire safety systems in the SNCU at the time of the fire.
Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, has expressed his grief and sympathy over the tragedy. He has ordered to provide the best possible care and monitor the condition of the affected infants. The chief minister has also asked to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report on the fire cause. Reddy has demanded to enhance the security measures of all hospitals in Telangana to avert similar incidents.
The probe will look into whether the fire was caused due to the negligence on the part of the hospital administration and what exact circumstances led to the tragedy.
