Three Indian nationals died and five people were injured in a fire at a residential building in Bochum, Germany, on Tuesday; a 41-year-old Romanian resident of the building has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The fire broke out at around 4:15 am local time and an emergency service was alerted. Firefighters who arrived at the building discovered the three Indians dead inside a second-floor apartment. Five other people in the building suffered from smoke inhalation and were hospitalized in Bochum.

Indian Nationals Among Germany Fire Victims
The death of the three Indians has triggered a police investigation into the circumstances of the blaze in the German city.
The rescue operation was hampered by the fact that the flames spread upwards and impeded the firefighters’ access to the upper floors. Two people were saved using a turntable ladder after the fire engulfed the stairs, two others with portable ladders and one with a safety cushion, Reuters news quoted German Press Agency (DPA).
The nationalities of the five injured people have not been specified in the reports so far.
Romanian Resident Arrested as Germany Probes Deaths
German police have arrested a 41-year-old Romanian resident of the building. He is suspected of murder in relation to the death of the three Indian nationals and was grilled by the homicide squad detectives.
The police and prosecutors announced the arrest on Wednesday. A spokesperson for Bochum police said, according to German public broadcaster WDR, that the initial evidence had provided the investigators with a reason to suspect murder.
Authorities have said that they have ruled out a technical malfunction that caused the fire. They are looking into the possibility that the fire was set deliberately or accidentally. It is unclear what the circumstances of the death are, or what charges will be brought against the arrested man.
Investigation Into Bochum Blaze
The authorities are investigating the causes of the fire and a number of circumstances that led to the deaths. Information regarding the victims’ identities and their relations with the German city has not yet been made public.
The probe will look into how the blaze started, whether it was deliberate, and what part, if any, the arrested resident played.
