As per reports, a newly married couple had a nightmare honeymoon in Sittong, Darjeeling after a barbecue mishap caused severe burns to the wife. This happened on September 13 in a homestay, where the couple had made arrangements to have a barbecue that night.
A honeymoon barbecue mishap in Sittong, Darjeeling on September 13 caused severe burns (60%) to Nikita and injured her husband Souvik Das, leading to a police complaint and an inquiry into the incident and homestay safety protocols.
An incident video of the same has now come to light through the CCTV camera and is being shared on various social platforms. The husband of the woman has even registered a complaint with the police regarding this matter.
Newlywed Couple Had Gone To Sittong For Honeymoon
The girl, by name Nikita, had come to Sittong along with her husband Souvik Das, who hailed from Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district.
The couple got married just about a month before coming to Sittong. It is claimed that Souvik requested the homestay management to organize a barbecue for their couple on the night of September 13.

The barbecue had been organized at about 8:30 p.m., with one of the employees getting the couple’s food ready.
CCTV Captures Moment Flames Catch Woman
According to Souvik’s account, the employee was cooking corn when he allegedly poured a liquid onto the barbecue fire. The CCTV footage shows Nikita and Souvik sitting near the barbecue. Moments after the liquid is poured onto the fire, the flames suddenly rise and catch Nikita.
The woman is seen falling to the ground as her husband immediately rushes towards her. Souvik can also be heard shouting as he tries to help her.
The employee seen handling the barbecue initially runs away from the flames. He later removes his T-shirt and appears to use it in an attempt to put out the fire.
The footage has raised questions about how the barbecue was handled and whether adequate safety precautions were followed.
Woman Suffers 60% Burns, Husband Also Injured
Souvik said that Nikita got 60 per cent burn injuries due to the incident. His hands too got burn injuries when he tried to help his wife.
As per Souvik, it was tough for the couple to arrange transportation in the aftermath of the incident.
“60 per cent of burns on my wife’s body. No arrangement for primary treatment at homestay. There were no vehicles. We waited for hours before we could get one vehicle and take my wife to Siliguri. I demand justice,” Souvik was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Finally, the couple went to Siliguri for treatment.
Police Complaint Filed Over Incident
After the case, Souvik filed a complaint with the police about the incident at the homestay.
According to an officer from the police, an inquiry would be carried out by the relevant authorities.
This inquiry will check the cause of the fire outbreak, the liquid used in the barbecue, and whether the homestay has sufficient safety measures and medical help available for visitors.
The viral CCTV footage has also highlighted the safety measures adopted in the homestays, especially when providing fire-based facilities to tourists.
