The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has announced scheduled power shutdowns across several sectors of Chennai tomorrow, Friday, June 19, to facilitate routine monthly maintenance work.

While most regions will experience a 5-hour outage (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM), please note that the St. Thomas Mount region will face an extended 8-hour outage starting earlier at 6:00 AM.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board announced Chennai power shutdowns for June 19 maintenance (9 AM-2 PM, St. Thomas Mount 6 AM-2 PM), alongside a ₹2,275 crore plan to upgrade Chennai’s grid and statewide substation projects.

Affected Areas by Region

Thirumangalam Region
Timing: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (5 Hours)

Areas: Anna Nagar, Kalaivanar Colony, Padi Pudhu Nagar, Medimix Avenue, Thiruvalleeswarar Nagar, Quarters, Padi Kuppam Road, Penn Foundation, Sathya Sai Nagar, Welcome Colony, TV Nagar, Rohini, Kurinji Colony, Jawahar Colony, Sakthi Colony, Thirumangalam, and Nehru Nagar.

Taramani Region
Timing: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (5 Hours)

Areas: Thiruvalluvar Street, Sathiyappan Road, MGR Veeranam Road, Wireless Illam, Sandhya Nagar, Ambedkar Puratchi Nagar, Thiruvallur Nagar, Kurinji Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Janakiraman Nagar, Rathinamani Nagar, Thanthai Periyar Nagar, Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Pudhiya Colony, Old Taramani, Pudhu Taramani, Udhaya Nagar, and VGP Selva Nagar.

Royapuram Region
Timing: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (5 Hours)

Areas: Cemetery Road, Raman Street, Thoppai Street, Arthan Road, Mosque Street, Adam Street, Mariyadas Street, Meenakshiamman Pettai, Tank Street, Dhobi Khana Street, Pichandi Lane, Panaimara Thotti, Vaikunda Nadar Street, Thandavamoorthy Street, Corporation Model Lane, Appaiyar Lane, NRT Road, and Amman Koil Street.

St. Thomas Mount Region (Extended Hours)
Timing: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM (8 Hours)

Areas: Butt Road, Butt Lane, Military Quarters, Mckins Road, St. Thomas Mount, Ramar Koil Street, Meenambakkam, Mount-Poonamallee Road, Airport area, Nandambakkam Main Road, GST Road, Adambakkam (Udhgiri County), Nazarethpuram, Burma Sripuram Colony, Alandur, and Police Officer Road.

Residents in these areas are advised to plan ahead, charge essential devices, and store adequate water before the scheduled shutdown times.

State Updates: ₹2,275 Crore Infrastructure Plan

To tackle these recurring disruptions in the long run, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired a high-level review meeting on Tuesday, rolling out major state-wide distribution upgrades:

Chennai Focus: A dedicated ₹2,275-crore plan has been drawn up to specifically strengthen the capital’s power grid.

Statewide Grid Upgrades: 121 new or upgraded substations (worth ₹10,109 crore) are currently under construction across Tamil Nadu, with another 231 substations (estimated at ₹15,032 crore) proposed.

Faster Response Teams: To resolve unexpected faults quicker, the government has launched 77 additional Fuse-Off Call centres, 7 new fault-repair teams, 125 power restoration vehicles, and 2 dedicated underground cable fault detection teams.
