Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China and Russia should deepen coordination to strengthen and expand the BRICS mechanism. Wang said this could help BRICS act as a key force for the Global South. Wang made the remarks while meeting Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in New Delhi. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in New Delhi and called for closer China Russia cooperation to strengthen and expand BRICS as a Global South platform. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers gathering hosted by India, according to a post shared on X by Ambassador Xu Feihong.

The meeting took place alongside the BRICS National Security Advisers gathering held in India on June 22-23. India hosted the conclave as the current chair of the grouping. Wang and Shoigu attended the discussions and also met on the sidelines. Xu Feihong posted photos from the meeting along with details on the talks.

BRICS mechanism coordination and expansion

Xu wrote, “Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, met with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in New Delhi.\” Wang described BRICS as a platform where countries can practice multilateralism. Wang also linked BRICS work to fairness, justice, peace, and security.

According to Xu, Wang urged Beijing and Moscow to work closely on BRICS cooperation. Wang said both sides should focus on strengthening and widening the mechanism. Wang added that this approach would support BRICS as a leading force of the Global South. The comments placed emphasis on joint planning between China and Russia inside the bloc.

BRICS security challenges and consensus

Xu said the BRICS meeting should focus on shared positions among member countries. The gathering should also address security challenges and protect the wider security environment. Xu added that the work should add certainty during global instability. The aim, as described, was to increase BRICS contributions through coordinated action.

China-Russia cooperation for development and revitalisation

Xu quoted Wang on wider China-Russia ties beyond BRICS. Wang said, \”Wang said China is ready to work with Russia to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen comprehensive strategic coordination, promote the accelerated development and revitalisation of the two countries, and make China-Russia contributions to the peaceful development of mankind,\” the Chinese envoy wrote.

BRICS began with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia joined in 2025, taking the bloc to 11 members. The grouping now brings together major emerging economies across several regions.

Figures cited for BRICS highlight its scale in the global economy. The 11 countries represent around 49.5 per cent of the world’s population. They account for around 40 per cent of global GDP and about 26 per cent of global trade. The meeting in New Delhi was framed as part of efforts to align views and strengthen cooperation.
