India Post is preparing for a major shift as the Union government moves to turn old-style post offices into digital, customer-led service hubs. Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that 25,091 post offices will be upgraded within about one and a half years. The project aims to change public perception of post offices from basic mail centres to key parts of national logistics and digital service networks.

India Post is upgrading 25,091 post offices into digital, customer-led service hubs within 1.5 years, aiming to become a profit center by 2029-30 and launching a Postal Logistics Infrastructure Plan, with a pilot project initiated in New Delhi.

The modernisation drive is also linked to a commercial plan. Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government wants India Post to move from a Cost Centre to a Profit Centre by 2029-30. Departmental revenue has already risen from Rs 13,218 crore to Rs 15,296 crore within one year. Officials believe that better use of logistics, digital banking and e-commerce can make India Post one of the country’s strongest service agencies.

India Post logistics push and digital India Post plans

Alongside the physical revamp, the government is positioning India Post as a serious logistics player. Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that a Postal Logistics Infrastructure Plan will be introduced, aimed at creating a world-class logistics network. India Post currently handles about 7.5 crore parcels and 90 crore letters every year, and policymakers want to use this base to serve e-commerce and other sectors more effectively.

Financial and identity services already form an important part of India Post operations. Around 13 crore customers are linked with India Post Payments Bank. There are 40 crore active post office savings accounts holding more than Rs 23 lakh crore. Post offices have helped issue 15 crore Aadhaar cards and supported 2.12 crore passport-related services, showing how the network is now tied to many public services.

Modern India Post branches and Nehru Place pilot model

The pilot for this new format has started at Nehru Place in New Delhi, where Jyotiraditya Scindia opened a redesigned post office. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Minister of State for Communications Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani also attended the launch. The Nehru Place outlet is described by the government as a trial model for the future of India Post rather than a routine branch upgrade.

This Nehru Place post office looks different from a typical government office. It features a modern interior, digital service systems and improved seating. Customer ease has been given clear priority. The School of Planning and Architecture designed the layout. Officials say the focus now is not only on strengthening back-end systems but on a visible front-end transformation that changes day-to-day user experience.

India Post network reach, identity and customer experience

Jyotiraditya Scindia also spoke about a personal connection with the postal system and stressed its social role. During the event, Jyotiraditya Scindia said, “The postal department is not just a government institution but the lifeline of the nation.” India Post is described as one of India’s largest networks, with about 1.65 lakh post offices across the country.

On average, this means there is one postal service point for every four villages. Where no post office building exists, India Post Payments Bank delivers services digitally. The modernisation plan includes digital counters, open service areas, smart workspaces and faster processing systems. The aim is to make every upgraded post office more welcoming and easier to use for walk-in customers.

Experts argue that this change matters because India Post already reaches remote regions that many private players do not cover. The government now wants to convert that reach into digital and commercial strength. If the Nehru Place model works well, officials expect village-level access to banking, insurance, parcels and government services to become stronger, and the overall post office system in India could look very different over the coming years.
