Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 3,108.55 crore main ring pipeline project to integrate Chennai’s drinking water distribution network.
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will execute the project over the next four and a half years with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank, according to the project overview presented at the ceremony.
Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay initiated a Rs 3,108.55 crore main ring pipeline project to integrate Greater Chennai’s drinking water network, aiming to benefit 91 lakh residents. The CMWSSB will execute the 4.5-year project with ADB financial aid, connecting water facilities via SCADA technology.

The circular pipeline network aims to secure drinking water for about 91 lakh residents within Greater Chennai Corporation limits by linking all major water treatment and desalination facilities into a single grid. The integration will allow authorities to immediately divert water from a functioning source to a deficit area in the event of localised supply disruptions.
The completed network will connect five existing water treatment plants, at Puzhal, Surappattu, Kilpauk, Chembarambakkam and Veeranam, along with the operational desalination plants at Minjur and Nemmeli.
It will also integrate the new 400 MLD desalination plant now under construction, officials said. To optimise distribution, the entire interconnected system will be monitored and managed through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology from a modernised CMWSSB control room, they added. State ministers N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and A Rajmohan attended the event.
