US President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelensky of failing to reach an agreement to end the war with Russia. Speaking at the White House on Saturday, Trump said Ukraine needed a leader capable of negotiating a settlement with Moscow.

Donald Trump suggested Ukraine needs a new president to end the Russia-Ukraine war, criticizing Zelensky while promoting a deal for Russia to supply over 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel, which Zelensky denounced shortly after.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal. For some reason (Zelenskyy) never does,” Trump said.
Trump Blames Incompetence For Russia-Ukraine War
Trump also claimed that the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, would not have started if he had been US president at the time.
“That war would have never started. There was no reason that that war with Ukraine and Russia started. It started due to incompetence,” Trump said.
He further criticised Zelensky over Ukraine’s territorial losses and the human cost of the conflict, adding, “And I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.”
Trump’s remarks underline his continued pressure on Kyiv to reach a peace agreement with Moscow.
Zelensky Criticises US-Russia Diesel Deal
The comments came a day after Zelensky criticised a deal announced by Trump involving Russian diesel supplies following a relaxation of sanctions on Moscow.
Zelensky described the move as “unworthy of our partners” and a “weak decision”. He also accused Russia of responding to the easing of restrictions by attacking Ukrainian territory.
“Today, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia,” Zelensky said in a post on X.
Trump Announces 300,000 Tonnes Of Diesel Supply
On Friday, Trump said Russia would supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to international markets following his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said the move was intended to increase fuel supplies and help bring down energy costs ahead of the US midterm elections.
“Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace,” Trump wrote on social media.
The Kremlin confirmed Moscow’s position, saying Russia “reaffirmed its readiness to supply oil and oil products to the American and world markets.”
The developments come as Washington continues to pursue efforts to end the war while balancing diplomatic negotiations and economic interests.
