A four-storey building in Rohini Sector 16 in Delhi collapsed under the weight of heavy rain on Wednesday evening, trapping some of the occupants under the debris and sparking a huge rescue operation for the trapped. Emergency personnel were called immediately, and two people were rescued; five others were thought to be trapped have not yet been found.
A four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Rohini Sector 16 on Wednesday evening, possibly due to heavy rain and ongoing renovation, trapping residents; two were rescued, and five are feared missing as rescue efforts continue.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) had been alerted about the collapse at about 4.19 pm. Opposite an MCD school in Sector 16, the building collapsed and authorities started immediately saving the lives.
The DFS deployed four fire tenders, two water bowsers, one multipurpose vehicle and one intensive rescue tender, to expedite the rescue operations. Firefighters, police officers and disaster response teams have been toiling around the clock to clear up the debris and look for survivors.
Rescue workers could be seen trying to reach people trapped under the debris through gaps between collapsed concrete blocks through the site.
Building Was Reportedly Undergoing Renovation
Initial details indicate that the structure was aged and it is believed that the building was being constructed or renovated at the time of collapse. But it has not yet been determined if the work was a factor in the incident.

The cause of the collapse is still being investigated, and will be followed by a detailed structural assessment by authorities after rescue efforts have been completed.
Area Sealed as Rescue Teams Continue Search
Rescue workers have been cordoned off around the collapsed building to ensure their safety. The equipment has been brought in to carefully remove the debris, but not harm anyone who may still be lodged beneath it.
Senior officials from the Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police are supervising the rescue operation. There are no immediate reports of any deaths and the number of trapped people remains to be confirmed.

The Rohini incident has come less than a month after a four-storey building collapsed in Saidulajab area of Delhi on May 30. That tragedy resulted in the loss of six lives and several injuries, giving new cause for worry about the structural integrity of aging buildings in the national capital.
The rescue in Rohini would be continued till all the trapped people are accounted for, officials said. Further information about the reasons for collapse, casualties and the number of people rescued will be available after the operation.
