A passenger bus caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa district during the early hours of Wednesday, killing eight people and injuring at least 22 others. The bus was carrying around 37 passengers and was travelling from Haridwar to Indore when the incident took place at around 2:30 am.

According to the police, the bus lost control after hitting the trailer and fell into a gorge, after which a fire broke out in the rear portion of the vehicle.

Eight people died and 22 were injured when a passenger bus traveling from Haridwar to Indore caught fire early Wednesday on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Dausa, Rajasthan, after colliding with a trailer and falling into a gorge.

According to officials, eight passengers lost their lives in the accident while 22 others sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The bus was operated by Hans Travels of Indore, according to the police.

Six bodies were initially taken to the district hospital as rescue and recovery operations continued at the accident site. Authorities are working to identify the victims and assist their families.

Police personnel, fire service officials and emergency response teams reached the scene soon after receiving information about the incident. Rescue operations were launched immediately to evacuate passengers and bring the fire under control.

Dausa Superintendent of Police Piyush Dixit visited the accident site and supervised the rescue and recovery efforts.

District Collector and District Magistrate of Dausa, Dr Saumya Jha, said, “The bus was travelling from Rishikesh to Indore when it caught fire following a collision on the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway around 3:15 or 3:30 AM. Around 24 or 25 people managed to escape safely and were rescued; they are currently doing well. Two people died at the scene, and while conducting rescue operations after bringing the fire under control, we discovered some charred remains. These have been sent to the hospital, and the rescue operation is still ongoing. Regarding the total number of casualties-we can only provide an approximate figure at this stage; the final count is not yet confirmed. There have been around seven to eight deaths.”

Officials have not yet confirmed what caused the bus to catch fire. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
