There is some relief in sight for people in Delhi as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain and thunderstorms in parts of the city. After days of rising temperatures and intense heat, Delhiites woke up to an unusually cloudy morning, bringing hope of cooler weather later in the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rain and thunderstorms for Delhi, issuing a yellow alert following a season-high minimum temperature of 24°C, while Kerala remains under a heatwave yellow alert until April 19 with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C in Palakkad.

The weather department has also issued a yellow alert, indicating that residents should stay cautious as weather conditions may change quickly, with possible thunderstorms and light showers in isolated areas.

Temperature Touches Season’s Highest Minimum

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24°C, which is the highest so far this season. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 39°C, keeping the day warm despite cloud cover.

Meteorologists explained that the current hazy and cloudy conditions are due to a cyclonic circulation over western Rajasthan and nearby Pakistan. This system has carried dust particles towards Delhi-NCR, leading to haze and a slight drop in air quality.

Weather Changes Linked to Activity in Rajasthan

Experts noted that nearby regions in Rajasthan, including Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, and Bikaner, experienced thunderstorms and light rainfall recently. These weather patterns have influenced conditions in Delhi as well.

The cloud movement and moisture from these areas are likely to bring similar changes to the capital, including brief spells of rain and gusty winds.

Heatwave Conditions Still Likely Ahead

Despite the temporary relief, weather experts have warned that temperatures may rise again in the coming days.

According to Skymet’s Mahesh Palawat:

Temperatures across Delhi-NCR and northwest India may rise to 41-42°C over the next few days, possibly leading to heatwave conditions in some areas.

This means that while rain may bring short-term comfort, the overall trend of rising heat is expected to continue.

Kerala Also Under Heat Alert

While Delhi may see some rain, southern states are facing intense heat. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for high temperatures in Kerala until April 19, as per the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.

Several districts are expected to witness high temperatures:

  • Palakkad may reach around 40°C
  • Kollam could see 39°C
  • Kottayam is likely to touch 38°C

Other districts such as Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur may experience temperatures close to 37°C, while Thiruvananthapuram could record around 36°C.

Officials have also warned of hot and humid conditions, especially in non-hilly areas, with temperatures expected to remain 2-3°C above normal.

What the Yellow Alert Means

A yellow alert signals moderate weather conditions that may affect daily life. Authorities advise people to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Be cautious during thunderstorms
