One of India’s biggest and most ambitious road infrastructure projects, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, is now on the verge of becoming fully operational. Officials have indicated that the remaining stretch of the expressway could be opened to traffic any time after June 20, following the completion of a key 4.9-kilometre tunnel near Kota in Rajasthan.

Final Stretch Ready After Completion of Kota Tunnel
The completion of the 4.9-km tunnel near Kota marks one of the final milestones in the construction of the 1,386-kilometre-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Officials say that with this crucial section now complete, the corridor is in its last phase before opening for uninterrupted travel.
While a large portion of the expressway connecting Delhi to Gujarat had already become operational earlier, a few pending sections delayed the full commissioning of the project. Land acquisition issues and work on technically challenging stretches contributed to the delay.
Now, with the Kota tunnel completed, the final missing link has been bridged.
Why the Kota Tunnel Is a Major Engineering Achievement
The newly completed tunnel is not just another stretch of road-it is being hailed as a landmark achievement in Indian infrastructure.
The eight-lane tunnel passes beneath the Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, making it one of the few large-scale transport projects in the country designed to minimise disturbance to a sensitive wildlife habitat.
What makes it even more remarkable is that it is believed to be the first eight-lane highway tunnel of its kind, built to carry high-speed traffic while preserving the ecological balance above ground.
By taking the road underground, engineers were able to avoid a long and winding route through the hilly terrain while ensuring that the movement of wildlife remains largely unaffected.
Delhi to Mumbai in Just 12 Hours
The biggest advantage of the completed expressway will be the significant reduction in travel time. Once the entire route is open, commuters are expected to cover the distance between Delhi and Mumbai in around 12 hours, compared to the current journey that often takes more than 24 hours by road.
The shorter travel time is expected to make long-distance road transport more efficient and convenient for both private travellers and commercial vehicles.
Big Boost for Trade and Logistics
Apart from benefiting regular travellers, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to have a major impact on India’s economy by reducing logistics and transportation costs.
The high-speed corridor will improve the movement of goods between key industrial and commercial centres, helping businesses save both time and fuel. Faster cargo movement could also strengthen supply chains and support manufacturing and export activities.

If all remaining clearances and operational checks are completed as expected, the entire Delhi-Mumbai Expressway could become accessible to commuters shortly after June 20.
