In recent years, Iraq’s comprehensive anti-corruption drive has emerged as one of the nation’s major political issues. The crackdown has resulted in the arrest of several politicians, ministers and high-up officials, and investigators have seized vast quantities of cash, gold and other valuables. During the operation, a sensational story about an Iraqi woman MP has been widely shared on social media, leaving many people doubting its veracity.

Iraq’s anti-corruption campaign resulted in high-profile arrests and seizures, with MP Alia Nasif reportedly having USD 15.5 million and gold confiscated. Viral social media reports about MP Hind Al-Abbasi possessing USD 57 million and gold undergarments have not been officially verified by Iraqi authorities.

The viral posts claim Iraqi MP Hind Al-Abbasi was found to have USD 57 million in cash and 27 kilograms of gold in her home, and even gold undergarments. Photos of stacks of cash, gold bars and fancy gold items have only added to the speculation. But the official information and fact-check reports tell a much more complicated story.

Iraq’s Anti-Corruption Drive Leads To High-Profile Arrests

In May 2026, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi was elected, who pledged to crack down on corruption, which has long been a problem in Iraq. The investigation reportedly ramped up following the arrest of former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan Al-Jumaily, whose comments directed authorities to a network allegedly connected to oil sector contracts.

On June 28, Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Unit staged simultaneous raids throughout Baghdad, including in the Green Zone, which is a heavily guarded area. It is reported that 47 to 67 people were arrested, including several ministers and senior officials as well as 12 to 15 members of parliament.

In the searches, massive amounts of money, gold, weapons and other property were seized. Some of the funds were said to be hidden within walls and buried under the ground, with investigators having to use heavy machinery to get them. The government called the raid “a component of its ‘zero tolerance’ campaign against corruption.

Why Are Alia Nasif And Hind Al-Abbasi Being Discussed?

There are numerous names associated with the operation, two women lawmakers have garnered the most traction.

A long-serving parliamentarian, Alia Nasif has long been linked to legal affairs, governance reforms and anti-corruption matters in Iraq. Investigators recovered almost 20 billion Iraqi dinars valued at approximately USD 15.5 million (around Rs 146 crore) and a large amount of gold that was found in her home, the region’s media reported. She and her son were also reportedly arrested and her case was one of the most widely reported developments of the investigation.

Hind Al-Abbasi is also reportedly linked to the anti-corruption probe. But her claims have come across more sensational on social media. According to viral posts, investigators found USD 57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of gold and gold bras and panties at her home. They were picked up by numerous platforms and many people started sharing them without checking whether it’s true or not.

Truth Behind The Viral Post

The anti-corruption raids and the recovery of cash and gold are real events and there is evidence that the police recouped substantial amounts of assets from several places during the investigation.

The viral stories about Hind Al-Abbasi, however, need to be looked at with a critical eye. While some Turkish media reports mentioned the figures circulating online, neither the Iraqi government nor the country’s Judicial Council has officially confirmed that USD 57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of gold or gold undergarments were recovered from her home.

Fact-check groups have also reported that many of the viral posts seem to contain information from various cases. The recovery of Alia Nasif is confirmed, but unverified reports of Hind Al-Abbasi are often added together to give a misleading overall impression.

The many images of fancy gold objects, such as the supposed gold underwear, also have not been substantiated. No official evidence has been found connecting those pictures to the Iraqi investigation.

How The Viral Claim Spread

The story was picked up because it included verifiable and unverifiable information. The information on the big busts of cash seizures, gold finds and arrests was real, but as it went viral, pieces of different investigations seemed to be converging in the same direction.

Iraqi authorities arrested at least 67 officials, most linked to the Islamic Republic, on corruption charges.

International reporting was mostly on the broader anti-corruption campaign and recovery, with reports from Reuters and Gulf News. The miraculous stories associated with Hind Al-Abbasi, on the other hand, have not been officially confirmed.

As Iraq continues its investigation into one of the country’s biggest corruption crackdowns, authorities have indicated that more arrests and recoveries could follow. At present, however, there is no official word on the specific claims made about the gold undergarments, though they have been widely spread on social media.
