The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the poll dates for five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency bye-elections which are due to be hold on October 6, with the results declared on October 9.
The bypolls will be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam with six Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat going for the polls.
India’s Election Commission has set October 6 for bye-elections in five Assembly constituencies across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and one Lok Sabha seat in Assam, with results declared on October 9 following various resignations.
The constituencies from where the by-elections will be held are Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal; Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu; Thattanchavady in Puducherry and Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam.
Reasons for Bypolls
The West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari won the Bhabanipur Lok Sabha constituency by defeating his long-standing rival Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee. However, he decided to retain his ministerial berth and resigned from the Nandigram Assembly constituency in the same Lok Sabha constituency.
In Rejinagar, Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir had won both the Rejinagar and Nawda assembly constituencies. However, he decided to retain Nawda, and resigned from the Rejinagar seat.
In Tamil Nadu, the by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats will happen due to the resignation of the sitting MLAs.
Madurantakam MLA Maragatham Kumaravel, an ally of AIADMK, resigned from the post in May and later switched parties from AIADMK to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
Similarly, his party colleague AIADMK’s P Sathyabama also resigned from the post of Dharapuram MLA and joined TVK.
In Puducherry, the by-poll will happen in Thatchavady constituency. It happened due to the resignation of the Puducherry chief minister N Rangasamy who resigned from the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency.
He had also contested from the Mangalam constituency. Thereafter, he decided to retain Mangalam, and resigned from Thattanchavady.
Meanwhile, the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam will also have a bypoll.
The Lok Sabha constituency was represented by Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi. However, Bordoloi resigned from the post and left the Congress to join the BJP ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. Thereafter, he had contested from the Dispur Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate and won.
