Elon Musk is facing fresh criticism online after comments about Instagram and men using the platform triggered accusations of sexism and anti-trans rhetoric on X.
The controversy began after Musk responded to a viral social media thread discussing how users behave differently across platforms over time. The original post joked about common online habits, including posting selfies, food photos and constant Instagram Stories updates.

Replying to the thread, Musk wrote: “Lmao Instagram is for girls.”
The comment quickly went viral and sparked strong reactions across X, with many users accusing Musk of dismissing Instagram users and reducing the platform to gender stereotypes.
The backlash intensified after Musk followed up with another remark aimed at men who share their Instagram accounts. “Sometimes grown men send me their Instagram profiles and I’m like are you transitioning or what?” Musk posted.
Critics argued that the statement mocked both men who use Instagram heavily and transgender people by using gender transition as a punchline. Many users described the remarks as offensive, while others accused Musk of continuing a pattern of comments targeting women and LGBTQ+ communities.
Several users also linked the comments to the ongoing rivalry between X and Meta. Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Musk has frequently positioned the platform as a space for political discussion and “free speech,” often contrasting it with Instagram’s more lifestyle-driven content.
Some critics suggested Musk’s comments were less about humour and more about undermining a rival social media platform. Others defended Musk, calling the posts “typical internet humour” and accusing critics of overreacting.
The controversy also revived discussion around Musk’s strained relationship with his daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, who publicly came out as transgender in 2022 and later legally changed her name and gender identity. Musk has previously blamed what he calls “woke culture” for the breakdown in their relationship, comments that drew widespread criticism at the time.
As screenshots of the Instagram remarks continued circulating online, neither Musk nor X issued any clarification or apology. The posts remained live on his account, with debate continuing across social media over whether the comments reflected casual humour, platform rivalry or something more personal.
