Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to review the regional situation and discuss recent contacts with leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye. The exchange came as US President Donald Trump said a US delegation would travel to Islamabad for a second round of talks linked to Iran.

Trump shared the plan on Truth Social on Sunday, linking it to negotiations with Iran. “My Representatives are going to Islamabad, Pakistan – They will be there tomorrow evening, for Negotiations,\” Trump wrote. The announcement came amid efforts to prolong a two-week ceasefire. That ceasefire is due to expire by Wednesday.

US-Iran talks in Islamabad and ceasefire deadline

The United States and Iran previously held rare direct talks in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. The discussions aimed to end their conflict. However, the meeting ended without any agreement. After Trump’s latest statement, expectations rose about extending the ceasefire. Officials still did not confirm whether Tehran would join the next talks.

During the call, Sharif spoke about recent contacts with other leaders, the Prime Minister’s Office said. The update listed leadership from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye. Dawn reported the remarks from the PMO handout. The PMO described the exchange as warm and cordial. The conversation lasted about forty-five minutes.

The PMO said the two leaders held detailed discussions on the present regional picture. Sharif also thanked Pezeshkian for sending a delegation for talks in Islamabad, the statement said. Sharif reaffirmed that Pakistan would stay committed to honest efforts. The PMO said friends and partners supported those steps towards peace and security.

According to the statement reported by Dawn, Pezeshkian responded by thanking Shehbaz and CDF Munir. Pezeshkian praised Pakistan’s commitment to the success of the peace efforts, the PMO said. Pezeshkian also said ties between Iran and Pakistan would keep strengthening. The PMO linked this to continued dialogue on regional stability.
