A 13-minute video recorded shortly before his death has brought attention to the marital dispute involving Vishwrajsinh Gohil, a postal employee from Gujarat, who alleged that he and his family were being harassed over a domestic violence case filed by his wife.

Gohil, who was posted at the Timba post office, died by suicide on October 12 after jumping from Konkankada at Harishchandragad, a popular trekking destination in Maharashtra. The cliff lies in the region where Thane, Pune and Ahilyanagar districts meet.

Gujarat postal employee Vishwrajsinh Gohil died by suicide on October 12 at Harishchandragad, Maharashtra, after posting a video alleging harassment over his wife’s domestic violence case and calling for a review of matrimonial laws.

In the video, Gohil spoke at length about his marital dispute, the allegations levelled against him and his family, and what he described as the misuse of laws dealing with domestic violence and matrimonial disputes.

He began the recording by saying that he had decided to end his life after losing hope. He went on to describe the emotional strain caused by the dispute, saying that marriage is traditionally regarded as a sacred relationship but that differences in temperament, opinions and habits can eventually lead to separation.

A major part of his message was directed at the way domestic violence complaints are handled.

Gohil alleged that many cases registered under provisions relating to cruelty and domestic disputes were based on unsubstantiated allegations. He claimed that such complaints could put husbands and their families under mental, physical and financial pressure.

He specifically alleged that “90%” of cases under Section 498 were false, adding that many complaints, according to him, lacked evidence and were based largely on verbal allegations. His comments were part of his broader demand for a review of laws relating to matrimonial disputes.

Allegations against Gohil and his family

Gohil denied allegations that he, his mother and his younger brother had physically assaulted his wife.

According to him, the complaint described ordinary disagreements within the family as serious incidents of violence. He questioned why the allegations were being accepted without, in his view, adequate evidence.

He also referred to a dispute involving gold ornaments. Gohil claimed that his wife’s family maintained that their gold was with his family, while he insisted that his side had witnesses to support its version.

He alleged that he and his family had repeatedly faced pressure over the issue, while no similar action had been taken on their claim that gold belonging to them was with his wife’s family.

Gohil further alleged that his mother had been abused by members of his wife’s family. He argued that all such allegations should be investigated and that the claims against him, his mother and his brother should be established through evidence.

At one point in the video, he questioned why his 16-year-old younger brother had also been named in the domestic violence proceedings.

Questions over marriage and family disputes

Recalling conversations with friends before his marriage, Gohil said they had asked him what he had looked for while choosing a partner.

He said his answer had simply been that the woman should be sensible. Looking back, he said he had not anticipated the conflict that would follow.

Gohil also questioned whether the existing legal and administrative mechanisms were adequately equipped to resolve matrimonial disputes. He claimed that officials involved in reconciliation efforts had sided with his wife’s family.

He alleged that his wife was taken away from their home by her family despite initially telling them that she did not want to leave and that no one in her husband’s family had harmed her.

According to Gohil, her position later changed and allegations were made against him and his family.

He also questioned what would happen to his parents and younger brother after his death, repeatedly referring to the impact that the dispute had allegedly had on his family.

‘Why should the law automatically favour one side?’

Gohil argued that women should be protected from genuine domestic violence but questioned the assumption, as he saw it, that women should always be treated as the weaker party in matrimonial disputes.

“Women are capable of everything – lust, greed and anger – so why is the law still tilted in their favour?” he asked in the video.

He cited other incidents and cases involving alleged violence against husbands while arguing that the implementation of matrimonial laws needed closer scrutiny.

Gohil also spoke about his relationship with his in-laws. He alleged that his father-in-law, Ajaysinh, had intimidated him during the dispute and recalled being told that he should regard him as a father.

Responding to that, Gohil said a father would normally support, guide and forgive his son rather than threaten him.

He accused his wife’s parents of showing little respect towards him as their son-in-law and alleged that minor disagreements had been portrayed as serious abuse.

He also criticised what he described as interference by his wife’s family in his marriage.

Appeal to Bhavnagar community

Towards the end of the recording, Gohil appealed to people in Bhavnagar to take notice of what he described as the consequences of matrimonial disputes and alleged misuse of the law.

He urged families with sons to consider the issue seriously and called for changes to the legal system.

“People of Bhavnagar, wake up,” he said, appealing to those who he claimed were caught in similar disputes to speak out.

He also addressed legal authorities and urged them to examine the issue before more families were affected.

Gohil warned that unless changes were made, he feared more people could die after becoming embroiled in such disputes.

His final appeal centred on his own family. He asked that justice be ensured for his parents and brother and urged authorities to examine the allegations against him rather than accepting them without scrutiny.

“Give justice to me and my family,” he said in the video.
