Green Hydrogen India s Secret to Global Energy Export

India’s abundant solar and wind resources could become the foundation of a new export industry, according to Krishan Rattan, founding partner of global investment firm Terra Invest, in a commentary published this week.

Krishan Rattan of Terra Invest reveals how India can transform its abundant renewable resources into a powerful export industry through green hydrogen. He emphasizes the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s role in building durable capacity and suggests strategic industrial clusters. India’s ‘sunshine’ could soon power global markets.

“India’s sunshine could become part of an industrial product bought on the other side of the world,” Rattan writes, describing how renewable power converted into green hydrogen can be embedded into exportable industrial goods such as ammonia and hydrogen-based iron.

Rattan gives particular weight to the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, noting its initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, including Rs 17,490 crore allocated to the SIGHT programme, which supports both electrolyser manufacturing and hydrogen production simultaneously. He characterizes this dual approach — building demand for hydrogen while developing domestic capacity to manufacture the equipment that produces it — as central to building durable industry: “is how lasting industries begin.”

He also references the IEA’s Global Hydrogen Review 2025 in recommending that India prioritize established industrial users, such as refining and chemicals, as the most practical early customer base, rather than betting on emerging applications first.

Rattan suggests India develop concentrated industrial clusters so that equipment manufacturers and engineering teams can build expertise across successive projects, and points to the Gulf region as a natural trading and investment partner given its ports, industrial demand, renewable resources and capital.

“Exporting sunshine would then mean exporting Indian capability along with it,” he concludes.
