It has been revealed that the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have exploited the scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein, an infamous American sex offender, to launch attacks against Saudi Arabia’s leadership.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels are reportedly using the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, particularly accusations involving sacred textiles from Mecca, to launch propaganda attacks against Saudi Arabia’s leadership. They aim to challenge Saudi Arabia’s religious standing amidst the ongoing Yemen conflict.
In an article published by The New York Times, it was stated that the Houthi rebels are leveraging the claims of transfer of Islamic textiles to Epstein to doubt the commitment to Islamic values of the Saudi leadership.
In this case, the main point of discussion is the alleged transfer of tapestries that were once related to the Kaaba in Mecca, which is considered the most sacred place of Islam. It has been claimed that such transfer constitutes an insult to Islam and is an example of corruption in Saudi Arabia.
Mahdi al-Mashat, who is the leader of the Houthis, has accused the people behind the transfer of sacred textiles to Epstein of targeting Mecca. No official comments have been received from Saudi Arabia regarding this situation.
How Houthis Are Using The Epstein Controversy Against Saudi Arabia
As per reports in The New York Times, the Houthis have used social media posts, videos, music, and statements as well as content that has been shared by online influencers for the purpose of spreading their political message. They keep track of events that happen around their rival countries and use these to back up their criticism of the opposing government.
In this instance, the accusations made against Epstein and the sacred textiles have given the rebels an avenue through which to challenge the position of Saudi Arabia as the custodian of Islam’s most holy places.
It is a fact that the Houthis have often represented themselves as the guardians of Islam and the adversaries of corruption and any foreign interference. They also use this platform to accuse Saudi Arabia of working against the religious ideology they claim to defend.
But the accusations regarding the tapestries and the political accusations made by the Houthis should be considered differently.
Saudi Arabia And Houthis Remain On Opposing Sides In Yemen
The latest exchange comes amid the long-running conflict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia has supported the internationally recognised government against the Houthi movement.
The conflict has involved military operations, regional rivalries and competing political interests. Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have also been on opposing sides of wider regional tensions involving Iran and other Middle Eastern countries.
According to the newspaper’s report, the Houthis have increased their propaganda activity alongside their military campaign. Their communications have become particularly significant amid renewed regional tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The group has also carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia during the broader conflict, adding to security concerns in the region.
Mecca Security Concerns Add To The Tensions
The controversy has also drawn attention because of previous security concerns surrounding Mecca, the city that houses the Kaaba and attracts millions of Muslim pilgrims every year.
According to the information provided, Saudi authorities placed Mecca on alert last month after accusing the Houthis of launching attacks targeting the holy city. The rebel group denied the allegation.
The latest dispute over the reported transfer of sacred textiles has added another dimension to the political confrontation between the two sides. By linking the Epstein controversy to the protection of Islamic religious heritage, the Houthis are seeking to challenge Saudi Arabia’s religious standing.
