The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the death case of model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, who was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal last week.
The Supreme Court initiated a suo motu case regarding model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma’s death in Bhopal, hearing allegations of dowry harassment and procedural lapses; her husband Samarth Singh is in custody, and his law license suspended.
The case has drawn nationwide attention due to allegations of dowry harassment, institutional bias and possible procedural irregularities during the investigation.
The matter is now scheduled for hearing on May 25 before a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi.
Supreme Court Registers Case On Its Own
The top court took suo motu cognisance, which means it decided to hear the matter on its own without waiting for a formal petition.

The case has reportedly been listed under the title:
“Alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young girl at her matrimonial home.”
The Supreme Court’s decision reflects the seriousness and public concern surrounding the case.
Twisha Sharma’s Death Sparked National Attention
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model and actor originally from Noida, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area.
Her death quickly triggered outrage and renewed discussions around dowry harassment and women’s safety in India.
While Twisha’s in-laws claimed she was struggling with drug addiction, her family strongly rejected those allegations.
Instead, they accused her husband and in-laws of mentally harassing her over dowry demands and driving her toward death.
Madhya Pradesh Government Recommends CBI Probe
As pressure around the case increased, the Government of Madhya Pradesh recommended a CBI investigation into the matter. The demand for an independent probe grew after Twisha’s family alleged that influential connections were being used to delay or weaken action in the case.
The family particularly accused Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, of using influence to affect the investigation.
Twisha’s Husband Taken Into Custody
Samarth Singh was taken into custody after reportedly remaining absconding for around 10 days following Twisha’s death.
He later appeared before a court in Jabalpur to surrender, but was subsequently arrested by police. A Bhopal court later sent him to seven-day police custody in connection with the alleged dowry death case.
Police officials said he was brought to the Katara Hills police station during the early hours after his arrest.
Notice Issued To Giribala Singh
Police have also reportedly issued a third and final notice to Giribala Singh after she allegedly failed to appear for questioning.
Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued a notice seeking her response regarding petitions challenging anticipatory bail granted earlier by a Bhopal court.
The High Court is expected to hear the matter further on May 25.
Bar Council Suspends Samarth Singh’s Licence
In another major development, the Bar Council of India suspended Samarth Singh’s licence to practice law. During the suspension period, he will not be allowed to use the title “Advocate” before his name.
The action came amid growing public attention and legal scrutiny surrounding the case.

The Twisha Sharma case has once again brought focus to the issue of dowry harassment and the treatment of women after marriage.
