Security has been stepped up along the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Madhubani district following protests linked to the recent communal violence in neighbouring Nepal, officials said.

Security has been heightened along Bihar’s Madhubani border with Nepal following recent communal violence, deaths, and curfews imposed in Nepal’s Sunsari and Saptari districts.

Tensions have continued in several districts of Nepal after communal clashes broke out in Sunsari district of Koshi province over the past weekend. The violence prompted authorities to impose curfews, enforce prohibitory orders and increase security deployment in affected areas.

At least three people were killed and dozens injured in clashes and police firing after a dispute over the use of loudspeakers during celebrations by two religious communities last Sunday.

On Friday, Nepalese authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Saptari district in Madhesh province, which shares a border with India.

As a precautionary measure, police in Bihar’s Madhubani district have strengthened security arrangements to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents along the international border, according to an official statement.

Police said intensive surveillance, vehicle checking and search operations are being conducted on all major and alternative border routes. Additional security personnel have also been deployed at border police stations.

Authorities have urged people to follow administrative instructions, avoid believing or spreading rumours, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
