Questions surrounding the condition of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei resurfaced after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he is alive and appears to be taking a more active role in Iran’s affairs. The remarks come months after Khamenei was injured during a joint US-Israel strike on Iran that reportedly killed his father, Ali Khamenei.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei appears more active, with US-Iran talks conditional on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and imposing nuclear program restrictions.

Rubio Signals Greater Involvement From Khamenei

Appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, Rubio said there were indications that Mojtaba Khamenei had begun playing a larger role in the country’s leadership despite concerns over his health following the February 28 attack.

“I think there are indications out there that he is increasingly engaging at some level,” Rubio told senators.

His comments are likely to fuel further discussion about Iran’s political leadership at a time when tensions in the region remain high and diplomatic efforts have made little progress.

US-Iran Talks Remain Stuck Amid Ceasefire Pressure

Rubio’s update came as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue to face obstacles. The ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8 has come under growing strain, raising concerns about renewed instability in the region.

Despite the deadlock, Rubio maintained that there remains an opportunity for a diplomatic breakthrough if Iran is willing to make significant concessions regarding its nuclear programme.

“There is the prospect before us, which could happen today, it could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week,” Rubio said.

Strait of Hormuz Reopening Among Key US Demands

According to Rubio, one of the major conditions for easing tensions is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route for oil and gas exports.

He said Iran must stop targeting vessels moving through the waterway and publicly confirm that shipping can pass freely. Rubio added that the United States would assist in clearing mines from the area once Iran takes those steps.

“They have to announce very clearly ‘The straits are now open, we’re not charging a toll’. We will help remove the mines that they put in there, and they will not fire on ships.”

The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major point of concern for global energy markets due to its strategic importance.

Sanctions Relief Linked To Nuclear Restrictions

Rubio also reiterated that sanctions relief would depend on Iran agreeing to major restrictions on its uranium enrichment activities. He said Tehran would need to either sharply reduce or completely abandon enrichment efforts as part of any future agreement.

“They have to agree on negotiating severe and long-term limitations and/or cancellation of enrichment activity,” he said.

Rubio continued, “Iran is being sanctioned because they’ve highly enriched uranium, Iran is being sanctioned because of their nuclear activities, if they agree to give up those things, there will be sanctions relief.”

His remarks underline the Biden administration’s position that meaningful sanctions relief can only come if Iran accepts substantial and lasting limits on its nuclear programme.
