Union Minister JP Nadda, who played a key role in ending the deadlock between students and government during the recent CJP protest, on Wednesday addressed Rajya Sabha on allegations of students arrest. Student protesters, who opposed the government and pilled up pressure on Dharmendra Pradhan to step down from education minister’s post, were slapped with FIRs and detained, going against the assurances made to students leaders.
Defending the police action, JP Nadda said detention is a very normal thing. Recalling his old days, Union Minister said he himself went to jail many times for protesting against the government.
Union Minister JP Nadda told Rajya Sabha that student detentions are normal, citing his own arrests as a student activist during the Emergency, responding to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s criticism of police action against protesters.
He said during Emergency, police picked him up twice from his classroom.
“I’ve been a student activist. I’ve been arrested many times from the classroom in Emergency days. This is a normal situation,” said Union Minister JP Nadda.
The statement came in reply to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s allegations of police brutality and unethical arrests of students, who were raising a demand to fix education and examination system of the country.
‘Democracy not safe under BJP,’ Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said in in Rajya Sabha over police action on protesting students.
