Mumbai’s suburban railway network faced a major disruption on Monday after a fire in the signalling relay room at Kanjurmarg station affected train movements between Vikhroli and Bhandup. Services on all four suburban railway lines were restored after nearly 10 hours, a Central Railway official told PTI.

A fire in the signalling relay room at Kanjurmarg station on Monday disrupted Mumbai suburban train services between Vikhroli and Bhandup, with Central Railway restoring all four lines after nearly 10 hours.
Fire Knocks Out Signals Between Vikhroli And Bhandup
The incident occurred around 9:33 am in the signalling and telecommunications (S&T) relay room at Kanjurmarg station. The fire caused signals across the Vikhroli-Bhandup section to go blank, forcing railway authorities to introduce alternative operating procedures.
Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila confirmed the incident to ANI.
“A fire incident occurred this morning in the S&T relay room at Kanjurmarg station, due to which all signals between Vikhroli and Bhandup went blank,” Nila said.
Special Safety Measures Introduced For Local Trains
With the signalling system affected, railway officials operated trains at cautious speeds under special authority. The restrictions caused delays and train bunching across the suburban network, inconveniencing daily commuters.
Central Railway initially used A-board signals at Kanjurmarg and on the section between Vikhroli and Bhandup. Absolute block working was also introduced, while train movements were regulated under TD 912 authority.
Technical teams worked to restore the signalling equipment and resume normal operations as quickly as possible.
Mulund-Thane Overhead Wire Problem Fixed
A separate technical issue affected train services between Mulund and Thane after an overhead wire problem was reported around 9 am.
According to Central Railway, the issue was resolved at approximately 10:40 am. Train operations on this section subsequently returned to normal.
All Four Suburban Lines Return To Normal
Central Railway confirmed that services on all four suburban railway lines at Kanjurmarg were restored on Monday after the prolonged disruption.
Earlier, Nila had said the signals on the up through line towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus had been restored while work continued on the remaining lines.
The railway said its teams were making every effort to restore services and ensure smoother journeys for passengers. It also regretted the inconvenience caused by the disruption.
