Kara, the latest Tamil outing starring Dhanush, hit theatres last Thursday and has managed a steady run at the box office despite facing stiff competition from the ongoing political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu. Directed by Vignesh Raja, the film opened to fairly positive reviews and generated strong initial curiosity among audiences.
The rural action drama features Mamitha Baiju as the female lead opposite Dhanush. Within its first week in theatres, the film collected an estimated ₹28.73 crore net in India. Though weekday footfalls witnessed a noticeable decline after the opening weekend, the movie has still managed to post a respectable worldwide gross of around ₹43.14 crore so far. Trade analysts now expect the film to conclude its theatrical run with an average overall performance.
The Tamil rural action drama ‘Kara’, starring Dhanush and Mamitha Baiju and directed by Vignesh Raja, earned ₹28.73 crore net in India and ₹43.14 crore gross worldwide in its first week, facing box office competition from the Tamil Nadu election season. The film, which follows Dhanush’s character robbing banks to aid exploited farmers, is expected to release on Netflix in late May or early June.
Industry observers believe the Tamil Nadu election season played a significant role in affecting the film’s momentum at the box office. Reduced audience turnout in several centres during weekdays impacted collections, even as the film continued to attract Dhanush fans and family audiences in select regions.
Apart from Dhanush and Mamitha Baiju, the film also stars K. S. Ravikumar, Karunas, Jayaram, Prithvi Rajan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sreeja Ravi in pivotal roles. The technical crew includes music composer G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematographer Theni Eswar and editor Sreejith Sarang.
The film revolves around Kara, played by Dhanush, a petty thief who distances himself from his family before marrying Malli, portrayed by Mamitha Baiju. The couple settles in Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh and works at a modest hotel to survive. However, unhappy with his financial struggles, Kara returns to his hometown seeking help from his father Kandhasaamy.
There, he discovers that his father has fallen into severe debt after borrowing money from banks. Realising that several innocent farmers are being exploited through loans and mounting interest, Karasaami decides to strike back by robbing banks. The remainder of the film follows his daring attempts and the consequences that unfold.

Meanwhile, curiosity surrounding the film’s digital release has continued to grow among fans. Since most Tamil releases arrive on streaming platforms within four to five weeks after their theatrical debut, a similar timeline is expected for Kara as well. Reports suggest that the movie is likely to premiere online either in the last week of May or during the first week of June. The digital streaming rights of the film have reportedly been acquired by Netflix.
