Wayanad was hit by a major landslide on Tuesday and five to six people have suffered injuries.

The landslide occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, Wayanad, close to the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tunnel road project site. The area is near Mundakai, which witnessed a major landslide in 2024.

A landslide happened near Meenakshi Bridge in Kalladi, Wayanad, adjacent to the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tunnel road project and near Mundakai, the site of a significant landslide in 2024.

The incident occurred where a tunnel work, connecting Malappuram and Wayanad districts, was in progress.

Police and Administration are carrying out a search and rescue operation at the spot and two teams of NDRF are on their way to the landslide site. Five people have been injured in the incident,

“Five people are injured after rubble from the Wayanad-Kalladi tunnel construction site slides down due to heavy rains in the area. The injured are admitted to a local hospital. There is no casualty in the incident,” ANI quoted Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) in a tweet.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office in Keralam, the NDRF unit stationed at Meenangadi will reach the accident site immediately. The NDRF team based in Kozhikode has also been directed to proceed to Wayanad.

Chief Minister VD Satheeshan has spoken to the Wayanad District Collector over the phone to review the situation.

The CM has also held an emergency meeting with Wayanad Minister T. Siddique and directed him to coordinate the rescue operations. The Chief Minister also instructed Revenue Minister AP Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique to proceed to Wayanad immediately, his office said.

Speaking to media, Keralam Minister T Siddique said, “It is not a natural landslide, but a man-made landslide. It is a clear case of lapse.”

He stated that the injured people have been taken to the hospital. “Their condition is stable. We will continue search and rescue at the site in Kalladi. The District Collector had given in writing to Konkan Railways regarding the chance of a landslide at the site. Two teams comprising a total of 60 NDRF personnel from Wayanad and Kozhikode have been directed to the site. The District Collector is present at the site. I, along with State Minister AP Anil Kumar, am going to the site.”

He then added, “Konkan Railways was directed to take necessary action about this earlier, but no action was taken by them. Such things cannot be tolerated because two years ago, 298 people lost their lives in a landslide at Mundakkai.”
