The Noida International Airport has achieved a major milestone after receiving aerodrome security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This approval marks a significant step towards making the airport ready for commercial operations.

Noida International Airport has received aerodrome security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), a critical step towards commencing commercial operations, following the appointment of Nitu Samra as interim CEO to comply with Indian nationality requirements for the role.

What the Security Approval Means

According to officials, the airport has received approval for its Aerodrome Security Program (ASP). This confirms that all security systems, procedures, and protocols are in place as per national aviation safety standards.

With this clearance, the airport is now closer to starting operations, as security is one of the most critical requirements before flights can begin.

Next Step: Launch of Commercial Flights

Airport authorities have said they will now coordinate with airlines and other stakeholders to finalise a launch date for commercial services.

The focus will be on ensuring that all systems, staff, and infrastructure are fully prepared to provide safe and smooth operations once the airport opens.

Leadership Change Ahead of Launch

The security clearance comes shortly after a leadership change at the airport. Nitu Samra, who was serving as Chief Finance Officer, has been appointed as the interim CEO.
This decision followed directions from BCAS, which requires the CEO of a greenfield airport in India to be an Indian citizen.

Why the CEO Was Replaced

Earlier, Swiss national Christoph Schnellmann was serving as CEO of the airport. However, aviation security rules do not allow a foreign national to hold this position at greenfield airports in India.

The rule is aimed at ensuring better coordination and control over airport security measures.

As a result, Schnellmann has now moved to a new role as Executive Vice Chairman on the airport’s board.

Background of the Rule

As per BCAS guidelines issued in 2011, the CEO of an Indian airport must be responsible for coordinating and implementing security measures. This role requires an Indian national to ensure compliance with security norms.

Although there were discussions in recent years to change this rule, it remains in effect.

A Step Closer to Operations

The Noida International Airport project, developed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, has faced delays in the past. However, this latest approval signals steady progress towards completion.

Officials say the newly structured leadership team will help ensure a smooth transition as the airport prepares to begin operations. Once operational, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Delhi’s existing airport and improve connectivity in the region.

With security clearance now in place, the countdown to its opening has officially begun, bringing the project closer to becoming a key aviation hub in North India.
